Horchata is a traditional, sweet, milky drink originating in Spain and Latin America that has become quite popular in Southern California, particularly with Mexican cuisine. Our take on the traditionally non-alcoholic drink is a blonde ale brewed with a heavy dosing of rice, cinnamon and fresh vanilla beans along with lactose for a litle extra creamy character. If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was carbonated horchata.

Rich golden pour, nice fluffy head. Wow, horchata blended with some spiked egg nog and that’s what this tastes like. Creamy, spiced and good!

UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 Tap at the brewpub. Clear rich orange pour with a small head. Aroma is vanilla and cinnamon - kind of smells like rice pudding with cinnamon on it. Taste is consistent with the aroma. Easy drinking palate.

Damn good. Creamy and egg nogg. Almost tasted like it came from a nitro tap even though it was poured from the bottle. The spice mixture is strong but not overpowering. The only down tick comes from the fact that it doesn’t really taste like beer.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, cinnamon and vanilla. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long vanilla and cinnamon finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the taproom. Almost clear in the glass, dark golden to amber, with a small, off-white head. The aroma has some vanilla hidden behind the cinnamon, a light caramel blending in. The flavor has some bitterness, else it’s more or less like the aroma. Full body, soft carbonation and a warming touch. Long finish. A bit intense at first, then really nice. 130811

Tap at The Bruery. Clear orange. Weak foam. Nose is nice chai vanilla, just a tad plastic and sunscreen. Taste is mega chai vanilla. Very delicious. SRM betrays a rich, dessert darker cinnamon to near chocolate flavor. Really nice.

Tap at the Bruery. Pours a hazy light orange to tan with no head. Aroma is cinnamon and vanilla overload. Definitely thinking of the inspiration drink here. Taste is very thin but has again loads of bread malt, vanilla and cinnamon. Weird malty thing going on here but I couldn’t really drink more than a few ounces of this stuff. Very, very sweet. Tastes similar to a horchata with a spike of pilsner for carb and beer taste.
