Horchata is a traditional, sweet, milky drink originating in Spain and Latin America that has become quite popular in Southern California, particularly with Mexican cuisine. Our take on the traditionally non-alcoholic drink is a blonde ale brewed with a heavy dosing of rice, cinnamon and fresh vanilla beans along with lactose for a litle extra creamy character. If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was carbonated horchata.

A- pours a mildly hazy copper with a faint lightly tan head that clings to the edge of the glass. Faint lacing. S- sweet cinnamon roll with vanilla frosting, vanilla extract, cheese danish, honey and some floral notes. M- medium body with a sweet, tacky, palate. Medium carbonation. T- bready malts, honey, vanilla extract to start. Wood, raisins and brown sugar next. Cinnamon overwhelms and comes on heavy in the middle and lasts through the quick ending. Ending is mostly cinnamon and dough. Interesting, but fairly simple and sweet - like a dessert beer.

Bottle at tasting. Pours hazy orange with light head. Aromas is funky cheese, wood, cinnamon, and mexican spice. Taste is much better, cinnamon bun strudel, wood, vanilla extract. Medium to fuller body. Overall, if you enjoy cinnabon, you will like this beer. Interesting.

Pours a golden orange color with thick head. Smells like my wife’s family’s homemade horchata. Although the flavors don’t work for me; probably because I’m not a huge fan of horchata to begin with.

dark orange pour, off white head. Cinnamon, and the bruery’s house yeast note on the nose. A hint of sweet cinnamon sugar as well. Awesome cinnamon, hints of vanilla and cinnamon sugar. Bruery house yeast as well. A nice texture to the beer as well.

11 ounce sample on tap at City Beer Store (last week). The aroma is obnoxiously sweet with vanilla. Totally overboard vanilla extract nose. Doesn’t really smell like beer. Mildly hazy orange body with a small, white head. Starts super sweet and overbearing with tons of vanilla. Tastes like liquid candy corn. Easily the most cloying beer I have ever had. WTF is this shit?

Bottle from RS membership. Aroma is actually pretty close to horchata, some alcohol and malts obviously present which is the only noticeable difference. Flavor is sorta that weak, Bruery-English-wheat-barleywine-type base with the cinnamon and vanilla. Hard to pick out the rice, but it probably lightened the body, so the natural horchata mix could come through. It was slightly sweet, but anyone who drinks (and likes) horchata knows that it's sweet as hell. This one gets nowhere near what it should be. For a doppelgänger beer, this one is awesome. (My wife even liked it, and she normally doesn't like horchata.) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rich golden pour, nice fluffy head. Wow, horchata blended with some spiked egg nog and that’s what this tastes like. Creamy, spiced and good!

UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 Tap at the brewpub. Clear rich orange pour with a small head. Aroma is vanilla and cinnamon - kind of smells like rice pudding with cinnamon on it. Taste is consistent with the aroma. Easy drinking palate.
