COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
the first batch of beer made using equipment on our new 3 barrel pilot system. These beers – 5 of ‘em to be exact – are 6.7% ABV red ales blended individually with coffee chosen by Jeff Dugan of Portola Coffee and our brewing staff. The idea is that they are meant to showcase how one ingredient can either drastically or subtly change the flavor of a single ‘base’ beer.

On tap at THE BRUERY. I’ve had 5 versions of this beer. Coffee aroma. Really nice smooth coffee flavor on this one. Some bitterness and malt roastyness. My second favorite of the five.

On tap at THE BRUERY. I’ve had 5 versions of this beer. Coffee aroma. Light malt caramel flavor with some bitterness. The coffee flavor was less intense on this one than most of the others. This was my least favorite of the five.

Draft at the Bruery. I tried multiple versions. Clear reddish amber pour, off white head. This beer is dominated by coffee. Nice coffee flavor, roast, light fruity coffee, cocoa coffee flavor, and light bitterness. Not much of the base beer going on here, still a good cup of coffee though.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2013 Portola Rossa Ethopia ’Gera Yukro’ 20 jan 2013, tap at the Bruery. Med orange, clear, no bubbles. Nose is nice med roast coffee beans. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Bitter dark coffee flavor with some red ale malt coming out. Ok. Portola Rossa Guatemala ’Patzun’ 20 jan 2013, tap at the Bruery. Light orange, clear, no bubbles. Nose is just like fresh ground nice coffee. It isn’t a huge huge coffee nose, it’s just a very nice coffee smell and there’s no competing aromas. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Taste is not as bold as the aroma. Coffee flavor is in the background, coffee flavor tastes like it is coffee with milk, and there’s more mild red ale noticeable. rating - 3.3 Portola Rossa Ethopia ’Gedo Worka’ 20 jan 2013, tap at the Bruery. Pinkish amber, clear, no bubbles. Nose is slightly tart/bitter coffee. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Not a very strong coffee flavor, but it is definitely a coffee infused ale. rating - 3.5 Portola Rossa El Salvador ’Casa de Lumina’ 20 jan 2013, tap at the Bruery. Light amber, clear, no bubbles. Nose is like opening a can of coffee beans, or a sweet coffee drink. Thin body and moderately fizzy. Nice balance b/w red ale and nice coffee. rating - 3.4

Sampled all five at the Bruery. Murky red in the glass with tan foam for a head. Each one smells great with fresh roasted coffee and honestly it was hard to really identify significant differences between each beer other than some were a bit heavier on the coffee than others. The flavor on each beer was totally dominated by the fresh roast from the coffee with perhaps some light chocolate and, again, the flavors were fairly similar with each beer. I couldn’t really tell what was going on with the base beer under the coffee. Nice beers though.

I had the Guatemalan Patzun version. Amber color in the glass with a small head. Heavy coffee aroma with a small amount of wood. Roasted coffee dominates with some vanilla and cloves. Tasty beer.

Portola Sumatra: deep red. Smooth coffee aroma. The beer really showcases the coffee added. Drinkable in small quantities. Ethiopia worka: deep red. Different coffee aroma, little deeper and more roasty. Similar in character to the rest of the series, but a less In your face coffee quality.

A great sampler of coffee beers that merges the coffee of Portola with the beer of the Bruery. The types of beans and the way they were brewed and how they were added to the beer is a story in and of itself. Try them all and the base beer for a nice buzz.

Dark amber pour with a khaki head. Intense coffee aroma. Espresso, light earth and fruit, and some chocolate. Hints of hazelnut and vanilla, a bit of toffee, too. The flavor is quite similar to the nose. A lot of coffee flavor. Slight nuttiness, a hint of vanilla, and a bit of earth. Some fruit, sweet toffee maltiness, and a bit of cocoa.
