Our spin on an American-style barley wine, and we we say "our spin", we mean it’s super hoppy. Dry hopped with Simcoe, Centennial and Sterling hops, a real piney and citrusy flavor shines through the dark, caramelly malt backbone. Some may think of it as more of a double IPA than a barley wine, we just think its delicious.

Tap at Capitol Beer Fest. Pours amber with a beige head. Aroma is citrus, not getting much brown sugar. Full bodied. It’s very spicy with a lot of citrus, and maybe pine. Treacle/brown sugar. Finishes surprisingly towards dry with spicy bitter.

Bottle thanks to Will. Pours a cloudy amber with medium beige head. The aroma is floral hops and pine. Medium mouthfeel with strong hop and pine with sweet malt finish. Light bitterness. Good

Dark amber pour from a 750 mL bomber. Thick off-white head. Nice hoppy nose on this. Almost a session barley wine - does that exist? Nice hoppy taste without moving to the bitter side. Earthy, slightly citrus notes in the hops. Nice malt backbone without being sweet. Oak hits you as well in the finish. Very nice.

Aroma of big tropical notes, floral hops, pines, cinnamon, brown malts, dark fruit components of plums, raisins, figs and some deep cocoa. Appears a very dark magenta/brown with big lace. Taste is a whopping greeting of bitter hops, hay, herbs, pines and slightly past due apricot juice upfront. Immediately followed by a huge malty combination of molasses, plum juice, burnt caramel, burnt malts, toasted bread, maple and big juicy figs. Finishes smooth with not alcohol burn and some nice hop oils, slight buttered caramel and residual hop leaves. Overall, this is an interesting barley wine double IPA hybrid. Upfront, there’s clear dominating hops, mid palate is all malts and the finish is leftover hops. Very good beer. A rating.

Bottle from 2011. Aroma still has a surprising amount of hop character, but its fading and becoming spicier and grassier. Some pine still exists but the citrus is gone. Lots of dark caramel and toffee with hints of alcohol. Light honey notes. Pours dark brown with a big, pillowy, tan head with good retention as it very slowly recedes to a mound that lingers in the middle of the glass. Moderately high lacing with smallish legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of dark caramel and toffee notes. Lighter burnt honey. Medium high bitterness. Light alcohol spice. Some dried fruit notes like raisins. Moderate hop notes of pine resin, grass and spice. Hints of cardboard. Some lingering sweetness and bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty nice hoppy barleywine. Not really my favorite style or favorite barleywine, but this is pretty easy drinking. Not sure what the hops tasted like fresh, but this has definitely taken on the same character that Bigfoot does with a few years on it.

"Long time wish list beer: Stunned that this "hoppy barleywine" is like a big, fat, thick juicy double IPA. There are barleywine qualities as well, but when it comes down to it, this beer is all about the citrusy hops. Bittersweet, very citric with a soft feel and a warming finish. LOVED it!"
