One of the more classic beers we’ve ever brewed here, The Workman’s Friend is our take on an Imperial Porter. Dark and creamy with flavors of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate peaking through the well hidden 8% abv. There is hardly a better beer to sit down with at the end of a winter work day.

Bottle:   Thanks for this one Rob!   Very foamy pour, dark beige head, nearly black body, could be busted...   Airy on the tongue, roasty, some chocolate notes, as well as some soft hop characters.   Certainly is bubbley.   Not really busted, just severe carbonation.   Doesn’t seem tart or sour.   Despite the bubbles, it seems fairly smooth.   Sweet roastiness without much of the acrid bitterness associated with the style.   Also has some chocolate notes too.   Wished the carbonation was toned down, but the beer itself is actually fairly tasty.   Hard to drink regularly... must take small sips to avoid the immense carbonation.

Opaque brown beer, tiny tan head. Softish palate, semi dry. Milky and roasty dark malt. Trace of cream. Coca Cola streak and fruits and a very light touch of smoke. Finishes semi soft and semi dry.

An unexpected gift from Richard. Thank you so much. The beer is near black with an inch of thick, tan head. The aroma offers roast, chocolate, a hint of vanilla, anise. The flavor brings a nice blend of vanilla and roast flavors. Slightly sweet with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with present carbonation. Overall, pretty tasty. Pours a dark brown. Nice alcohol legs on this one. Little bit of espresso head to it. This is a bottle from my cellar. Over a year or so old. Some of the coffee is gone. Little tart with bitter chocolate to it. Some cherry notes in there too.

A - Pours a dark black color with a touch of brown mixed in and a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lace. S - Aroma is a mix of strong roasted bakers chocolate with some dark chocolate, coffee, some smoke, roasted malts, and a bit of sweetness. T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts with some bitter baker’s chocolate and some light smoke and coffee. Through the middle, some vanilla comes through with some stronger smoke. The finish is a mix of roasted coffee and chocolate, smoke, and vanilla that linger. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and coats the tongue with a smoky, dry, and chocolatey finish. D - Very drinkable. Really nice balance of flavors with the coffee, chocolate, and smoke really coming together nicely.

750mL bottle. Poured very deep brown with a dense, well-retained dark beige head. The aroma picked up lots of burnt dark chocolate and black patent malts, with wisps of vanilla and cherry skins extending outward.. good stuff, but it smelled a little thin, if that makes sense. The flavor found dry-roasted, ashy black patent, chocolate, and light smoky malts.. mostly roast, and a little deep earthy bitterness going out.. finished with lightly tacky sugars and plenty of residual roast. Medium-bodied with low-moderate carbonation on the palate.. on the thin side for the style.. overall a solid brew, but I was looking for a little more.

Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate, dark - roasted coffee. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120202]
