COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed with beachwood and cherrywood smoked malt, and aged in bourbon barrels, Smoking Wood is a delicious demonstration of what wood has to offer when it comes to beer. This imperial smoked porter is brewed with a hefty amount of rye malt, contributing to a full body and light spiciness. Toasty oak, caramel and vanilla flavors balance the smokiness, contributing to an intense yet refined flavor profile.
The previous release of Smoking Wood was aged in rye whiskey barrels while this more limited version was aged in bourbon barrels, contributing a different nuance to the already complex ale.

Black with a thick tan head. Aroma is string bourbon and vanilla. Flavor is vanilla and string bourbon. Very sweet but manages to avoid being cloying. Slight roasted chocolate in the finish. Overall it’s basically a beer version of bourbon. Wife: 3.3

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/19/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense dark tan head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, bourbon, toasted oak, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, toasted oak, bourbon, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness. Slight roast/oak bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, toasted oak, bourbon, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged imperial porter style. All around great balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. The bourbon barrel version seems to be more mellow and balanced than the rye barrel version in smoke and roasted malt flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

Enjoyed early in the year of 2015, bought at Vika, shared with Simonsen and Carsten
Pours pitch black with a dense brown head. Smell of tar, roast, toast, harbour, salt sea water, islay whisky and coffee. Indeed very complex. Heavy sweet, liquorice, tar, more islay whisky flavors like harbour, peat and smoke, burnt wood and coffee. Ends with a moderate bitter finish. This is just exquisite stuff. Fantastic smoke and whisky flavors and aromas. Just try it! First rate of 2015.... wonder if any beer can challenge this

There’s a LOT going on in this beer. Smoke, spices, bourbon, and dark chocolate nibs. A mouthful of sass.

Starting off the New Year strong. Pours a black color with coffee colored head. Aroma of booze and booze. Then smoke, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, and wood. Light sweet caramel wood spice with a boozy bite. Dry dark fruit and chocolate notes on backend. Smoke throughout. Spice lingers. Very close to a stout. Tasty brew. Big big beer.
