Had this at the tasting at the hotel in Waterbury on our Vermont trip. Pours a deep lightly murky looking brown to black with a thin beige head. Smoke on the nose, lots of bourbon, big vanilla. Medium bodied, super sweet. Much sweeter than the rye version. Lots of sweetness, maple syrup, caramel. Kind of cloying and a little tough to drink. Overly sweet, lots of vanilla. Sort of tastes like pudding. Finishes up cloying with a lingering sweetness. More malt, roast, cocoa, chocolate. Too sweet, hard to drink, faint smokiness on the finish with a little lingering bourbon.

Bottle (750 ml). Thanks to the guy who shared it at Hill Farmstead pre-3rd anniversary tasting. Dark brown with a medium beige and and good lacing. Aroma is of medium smokey notes, vanilla, roasted malt, bourbon and light fruity notes. Taste is rich, moderately sweet and smoked with vanilla, bourbon, light fruity notes and spices. Medium to full body. Mouthfeel is oily. Soft to medium carbonation. Really complex. Good balance considering the smoke, the barrel treatment and the abv.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 czar (2396) - Québec, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 29, 2013
bottle share at BW - pre-hill farmstead 3rd anniversary. pours very dark brown with a nice beige rind, some retention. roasted and burnt caramel and toffee, clean and very nice smoky profile - never meaty, subtle vanilla comes through with this very nice use of bourbon barrel - bold but never coconuty, some pepper and other spices too. warming alcohol - relatively well hidden, moderate sweetness, soft carbonation, medium to full body. bit cloying, complex and smokiness is much appreciated.

Didn’t take many notes on this brew but it was very rich and full of vanilla, bourbon, spice and charred wood. Had a heavy body and kick even for 13 percent Sampled at share in vermont.

I liked it. Pours dark brown, almost black. Tan head. Smells of strong smoked wood, imagine that. Taste is chocolate, small coffee, smoke, and very prominent oak. Small burn. Reminds me of a smoked BBQ sauce. Definitely share with a friend or two.

Bottle thanks to Kevin. Pours a dark brown with medium beige head. The aroma is a strong oak, toast, and smoke. Thick mouthfeel with wood smoke and oaky finish. Hides alcohol decently, a very good smoked beer from The Bruery.

This one poured a very dark brown color with a small miniscule brown head. Aroma was of dark fruits, predominantly cherries, broubon, vanilla wood, smoked meats, rye and molasses. Flavor was just a punch in the face of smoke, vanilla, chocolate, sweet dark cherries and burnt brown sugar. Extremely complex and delicious.

Bottle shared by my good bud Randy, thanks brotha! Finally getting to try this version. Tons of smoky qualities here, mixed with bourbon, chocolate and malty goodness. I real treat of a beer.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a medium size dark brown foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of vanilla and bourbon with medium smokey notes and some roasted malt with some residual sugar. Taste is a complex and well balanced mix between some bourbon and vanilla notes with some medium smokey notes and some residual sugar with light dry roasted malt. Body is full with an oily texture and some medium to low carbonation. I really like the balanced between the flavours and the fact that the smokey notes don’t overshadows the other flavours. A bit rich to drink a whole bottle by yourself though.

Black pour-kinda brown. Little head little lace. Nose is complex-figs, wood, caramels, malts, sweet breads, nuts, cashews. Flavor is oak, bourbon , vanilla, smoke. Really nice.
