Brewed with beachwood and cherrywood smoked malt, and aged in bourbon barrels, Smoking Wood is a delicious demonstration of what wood has to offer when it comes to beer. This imperial smoked porter is brewed with a hefty amount of rye malt, contributing to a full body and light spiciness. Toasty oak, caramel and vanilla flavors balance the smokiness, contributing to an intense yet refined flavor profile.
The previous release of Smoking Wood was aged in rye whiskey barrels while this more limited version was aged in bourbon barrels, contributing a different nuance to the already complex ale.

On tap; dark brown in color. Aroma of molasses and soy, with some sweetness and vanilla. Flavor had the same components, and for the style and alcohol content this was quite drinkable.

Pours a thick black from the bottle with thin tan ring that leaves no lace but nice film of brown on the glass. Aroma is big on the bourbon up front, then you get hints of chocolate and vanilla. Taste is more balanced but still bourbon heavy, chocolate and vanilla bone out more as it warms, then lots of some that lingers on the tongue. Sweet and smoky, delicious, but I think I like the rye barrel better; we?ll see how it ages.

Bottle - 750mL crowned. 2014 Edition. Black pour with a very short dense tan head. Aroma is robust smoked malts, vanilla, molasses, roasted malt, coffee and booze. Taste is boozy and smoky up front with roasted malt, dark bread, spicy rye, vanilla, molasses, chocolate and coffee rounding it out. Body is medium-full and warming with a soft, dense carbonation. Rather sticky as well. Ends with more smoked malt, burnt dark bread, roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate, burnt caramel and booze.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a ring of toffee colored head. Aroma of roasted malts, booze, and oak. Taste the same with some spice. Very nice.

Appearance is heavy dark black, nose is heavy peaty smoke with a hint of bourbon. Taste is boozy, chocolatey/spicy rye, but not super heavy on the smoke. A monster of delicious beer.

Un nuage de fumé enrobe une masse chocolatée décadente aux accents de bourbon définis mais adéquat. Sa charpente est parfaitement riche pour transporter la charge des saveurs, j’adore cette variante.

My Bottom Line:
Wooden smoke rides tight specialty malts in this luxurious strong ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the darkness.
-Residual sugar level is relatively high, but everythng is polished.
-Smokiness is restrained throughout. This is not Schlenkerla level smoke.
-This isn’t complex, but everything is very well integrated and the mouthfeel is engaging.

Bottle; gros merci Martin et Michèle!

bottle. black. small head. fresh wet wood smells with dark chocolate and a splash of bourbon and mustiness. oily palate. flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla, green wood, char, and very light bourbon and butter. the abv is a bit too assertive though. love the wood flavors but i think it would better with a slightly lower abv.

"Intense yet refined is dead on! No way did i think this was 13%. Warmth, yes. Heat? None. I’ve never had the base smoking wood, but was told this took off all rough edges, which i beleive. My new favorite from an already awesome brewer! Black as night. Flavor and aroma intense well blended mix of vanilla, dark chocolate, roast, bourbon, oak, smoke...holy hell this was good. Super smooth. Had to go back for seconds! In the bottle, MF and flavor a half point lower each. Draft was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Low carbonation in the bottle, and a little "meaty". Still awesome! 4.6 tap 4.4 bottle"

Bottle from Justin, thanks! Pours black with a redbrownish head, rests down to a ring. Aroma is sweet with bourbon, smoke and chocolate. Taste is smokey with wet wood, bourbon, slightly peppery, surprisingly low alcohol presence, well balanced bitterness, leather, truffle praline, dark chocolate. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, smooth mouth feel. After taste has warming alcohol, chocolate and smoke.
Wow! Very complex taste and everything is in almost perfect proportion.

Wow sums up this beer. Big hits of bourbon and chocolate with an ending of smoke. Sip this one and enjoy it as it gets better with warmth.
