Brewed with beachwood and cherrywood smoked malt, and aged in bourbon barrels, Smoking Wood is a delicious demonstration of what wood has to offer when it comes to beer. This imperial smoked porter is brewed with a hefty amount of rye malt, contributing to a full body and light spiciness. Toasty oak, caramel and vanilla flavors balance the smokiness, contributing to an intense yet refined flavor profile.
The previous release of Smoking Wood was aged in rye whiskey barrels while this more limited version was aged in bourbon barrels, contributing a different nuance to the already complex ale.

Served in a Bruery tulip. Almost flat. Nose is better than Rye Whiskey and without as much smoke. Chocolate and roast. Quite a bit of alcohol.

2014 edition bottle. Pours almost black. Initial light brown cap that vanishes to a medium rope. Thick bourbon barrel aroma upfront. Vanilla bean, coffee, smokey wood, plum, and more bourbon. Taste is very bourbon sweet and woody bitterness. Mouthfeel is sticky.

750ml capped bottle pours black in color with a finger and a half of brown head that retains well and leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and light roasted grains and alcohol. Taste is bourbon with vanilla and chocolate malty sweetness with a light roasted grain bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden in the taste. Medium bodied with decent carbonation that tingles the tongue nicely. This is a well crafted porter that definitely needs to be sampled.

From notes. Tasted some time near the summer of 2012 with the Nashville crew. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves a thin collar of lace. The nose is super smokey with coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate, and a ton of maple bourbon barrel. The flavor is dark chocolate, maple, vanilla, coffee, and very smokey, but also nicely balanced. The body is full and oily with light carbonation and a long smokey maple bourbon finish.

Bottled. A black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes smoke, bourbon, roasted malt, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol, bourbon, and smoke, leading to a dry smokey finish.

750ml bottle from Canal’s Rio Grande. Poured a great looking pitch black silky body under an average sized deep beige thick foamy head. Aroma is too hot, lots of raw alcohol coming through. Notes of bourbon, wood, burnt vanilla extract, char, black olives and burnt chocolate. Flavor is a bit better than the aroma, notes of bourbon, charred wood, tobacco, dark burnt chcolate, burnt vanilla extract, cake batter and burnt toast. Thick full body with lots of heat that comes off rather harsh.

750 ml bottle from ABV. Certainly overpriced. Pours a nice pitch black color with a medium brown head. A big rich nose of tobacco, smoke, wood, some vanilla. A really big but drinkable brew: tobacco, ash, paper and oxidation, rye, bourbon for sure, hot whiskey, roasty, licorice, smoke, woody, a bit of metal. Certainly a big super sweet base. I think it works well. I really get cherrywood here.

Bottle. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has strong bourbon and vanilla notes with some smoke backing and a decent amount of sweet grains. Flavor is not boozy but has a nice bourbon note with a good amount of smoke and a bit of sweet dark grains coming through. A bit sweet.
