3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike.
The beer is black with a thick, mocha colored head. The aroma offers smoke, roast, oak, booze, bread, salt, campfire, burning meats. The taste is equally complex. Nice smoke flavor mingling well with a bold and assertive bourbon character. Full bodied and rich. A bit sweet. Alcoholic warmth in the finish. A solid beer from The Bruery. Worth a try.

24th Jan 2015: shared bottle at the Cotteridge Wine meet. Cracking beer! Poured black with thin tanned head. The nose was singed and smoked malts with whiskey hints, like a smouldering Irish Peat Bog. The taste was sweeter than the aroma indicated with the malt giving some caramel and toffee flavours, still smoky with some whiskey notes too. One of the best beers of the day for me.

Bottled, sampled at The Cotteridge Convention, many thanks to s_hartsorne for this one. Black with tan head. Full and sweet fruitiness, caramel, toffee’d but not overly so, there is a smoky backwoods type flavour, decent conditioning, loads of stuff going on. Blimey.

Bottle share. Cotteridge Beano. Nearly black. Barely a head. Light smoke. Some woodiness. Treacle. Rich, dark malts. Some tar. Taste is full, rich bitter. Boozy. Silky smooth. Lovely, this.

Black with a thick tan head. Aroma is string bourbon and vanilla. Flavor is vanilla and string bourbon. Very sweet but manages to avoid being cloying. Slight roasted chocolate in the finish. Overall it’s basically a beer version of bourbon.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/19/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense dark tan head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, bourbon, toasted oak, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, toasted oak, bourbon, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness. Slight roast/oak bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, wood smoke, toasted oak, bourbon, dark bread, light char, and oak/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged imperial porter style. All around great balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, smoke, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. The bourbon barrel version seems to be more mellow and balanced than the rye barrel version in smoke and roasted malt flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle shared by Brian. Smoking Wood The Bruery 14%
A pitch black pour with a tan beer, smokey caramel some rye earthiness with a hefty dose of bourbon. The taste is fantastically well blended bourbon, smoke & rye. Really nice smokey goodness.
