COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smoked Imperial Rye Porter aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels. A rich porter layered with rye spiciness and earthy smoke, caramel-like flavors, roasty malt and oaky deliciousness.
Brewed with beachwood and cherrywood smoked malt, and aged in rye whiskey barrels, Smoking Wood is a delicious demonstration of what wood has to offer when it comes to beer. This imperial smoked porter is brewed with a hefty amount of rye malt, contributing to a full body and light spiciness. Toasty oak, caramel and vanilla flavors balance the smokiness, contributing to an intense yet refined flavor profile. This is one of our favorite beers at the moment, we hope you agree.

Beautiful brew. Pours black with a quickly dissipating tan head (is my glass dirty?) Big barrel notes, smoke, dark malt and sweetness on the nose. Add chocolate, raisin, further smoke, peat, and a little rye zing. Leaves effervescent sweetness on the tongue along with lingering smoke. Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks zvikar. 2014 bottle. 13%. Black with a bit of brown foam. Lovely aroma with whiskey, vanilla, lots of dark chocolate, mild smokiness and a bit of alcohol. Sweet flavor with dark chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, caramel, oak, some nuts and an alcohol touch. Full-bodied. A bit too much on the sweet and alcoholic side, but still really good. Not too smoky though.

on tap at whole Food on p street. Nice head and nearly black body, it does not over whelm with whiskey notes but is complex, with smoke and peat and meats. just a tad sweet..

Dark brown. Nose of smoked meats and cheese with big rye malt/rye barrel character. Flavor is smoked rye and mild whiskey with a sweet chocolate, brown sugar, charcoal, and roast malt finish. Lingering whiskey and smoked malt.

Dark brown color. Big molasses, rye, dark chocolate, smoked bacon, soy sauce, off sweet nose. The mouth is medium full, tons of rye with molasses, charcoal, black liquorice, a touch salty, not too boozy. For the alcohol it’s not too boozy. Lingering rye.

November 8, 2014. Bottle. Black with a small dense brown head. Aroma is whiskey, chocolate, spicy rye notes, smoked wet wood, light smoked meat. Taste is medium sweet malty with whiskey, chocolate, peat and alcohol, light bitter roasted notes. Finish has some dry wood notes, light alcohol warmth, peat and chocolate. Medium to full bodied, a bit sticky mouthfeel, soft carbonation.

Lots of rye and booze here. Not really my cup of tea, like most of their beers. Pours black with mocha head and lace. Sweet finish with not of burnt bitterness. Some caramel. Tap at whole foods.

On draft. Aroma of whisky and dark baker’s chocolate. Flavors of whisky (without being boozy), chocolate covered raisin, with spicy rye at the finish. No suggestion of any smoke at all, but whatevs. Killer.

Bottle: Black as hell, oily & dense with not much head formation... Small tan ring, nearly gone in a few moments. Aroma of smoked & cured meats, mild bacon, woody campfire char, a hint of maple syrup, ash, & some spicy oak notes. Very small hint of anise hidden in there, too. Flavor has lots of smoke, too, pretty sweet as well with a little bit of chocolate & maple popping through. Campfire wood, smoke, a hint of salty meat. Very roasty with some ash & char in the finish. A touch of spicy rye notes & booziness, but balanced well with the dark & sweet malts.

8 ounce goblet - $9.50 at Argosy in Atlanta, Georgia.

Appearance: Inky black body topped with a thin beige head that dissolves into a ring.

Smell: Gobs of malty notes on the nose, from smoky molasses to rich chocolate to dark roasted coffee to brown sugar. Stewed fruits. Prominent barrel accents.

Taste: Heavy, plush, tongue-coating maltiness expressing flavors of roasty-toned espresso, dark chocolate ganache followed by a burst of sugary sweetness and piquant rye. Light vanilla, light smokiness. Dark fruitiness, a snippet of black licorice. Great rye whiskey character throughout. Smooth, sweet, warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Near full-bodied. Medium carbonation. Warming throughout without being sharply boozy.

Overall: Quite good overall and graciously potent, I found the eight ounces provided was more than ample even at a slow-sipped pace.
