Sour in the Rye is an American wild ale. A challenging beer to brew due to the substantial amount of rye malt, but you’ll be glad we took the time. The character of the rye asserts itself with clove and pepper in the aroma and flavor, and contributes a full body not generally found in sour beers. Pleasantly sour with notes of tart cherry, rustic earth and vanilla notes from a year-plus of barrel aging.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2015 At Jerry’s in Andersonville. The rye spiciness and sour work well together. Maybe this finished a little dry for my tastes but it was still pretty good. Puckery but not cheek numbing. Serving: Tap

man this was delicious. a bit of rye spice but mostly tart nose with some fruit and malt and caramel and a bit of oak. quite sour but not overly so. at bottom there’s some pretty funky bugs lefts but mostly it was a nice clean fruity sour.

On tap at Toronado. Light tart-lactic nose with oak, light spicy character, and a hint of sweetness. Hazy lustrous orange-amber with thin white head. Medium body with heavy carbonation. Tarts and lactic with chardonnay, mild spicy notes and touch of vanilla. Great sour ale with woody funky finish and lasting tart after.

Another solid sour from this brewery. I am not so sure the rye is adding the character they describe. It is more of just a caramally and sour beer.

On tap at Perch Pub with Leafs93 during Hookey Day. Pours a cloudy orange amber color with a thin white head that fades. Aroma of funk, cherry, and slight vinegar. A tart funky taste. Typical of the style. Tasty.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with little head Aroma is vinous with some peppery notes. Taste is immediately mouth puckering. Sour wine/grapes and some earthy funk. The occasional floral note makes an appearance. Full mouthfeel with a heavy carb. Very complex and tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at EBF 3/16/13. They ran out of Black Tuesday 40 minutes into the fest, so I tried this. Lightly tart a little spicy with hints of dark pitted fruit. Nice sour.

Hazy amber pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma is lactic sourness, vanilla, spicy earthiness. Flavor is tart, very dry, spicy, slightly woody, a really nice twang, but with a lot going on in the background. Excellent beer.

Hazy amber pour. Sour, slightly spicy aroma. Flavor is relatively straightforward, but refreshingly tart. The rye doesn’t come through as much as I was expecting but this is still a great sour.
