Sour in the Rye is an American wild ale. A challenging beer to brew due to the substantial amount of rye malt, but you’ll be glad we took the time. The character of the rye asserts itself with clove and pepper in the aroma and flavor, and contributes a full body not generally found in sour beers. Pleasantly sour with notes of tart cherry, rustic earth and vanilla notes from a year-plus of barrel aging.

Nez très brett mais également fruité. Grande acidité et complexité en bouche, avec une bonne longueur. Très sèche mais malgré l’acidité il y a une forme de douceur. Aspect vineux et huileux. Très bonne longueur et complexité.

Bottle that I had been holding for about 18 months. I think it’s the 2013 vintage. Poured a dark deep golden brown, similar-colored head. Nice tartness but not overpowering. Had a bit of a white wine feel to it. Tart white grape was kinda most of what I got out of it. It was a hit.

[6139-20140121] Bottle. Sour yeasty aroma. Hazy, brown orange body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sour yeasty dough flavour has a fruity apple base. Medium body is super sour. Yum! (9/4/10/5/18) 4.6

Backlog rating. 75cl bottle from bierkompass. It pours a pale amber color with a small white head. Aroma is funky oak with some malts and strong lactic and slight acetic sour qualities. Taste is acidic and light vinegarish with light citrusy hops. Medium to full bodied with good carbonation. Overall, really really good sour with clean tartness

Bomber into tulip glass, hazy yellow-hued orange color with thin off-white head. Aroma of acidic tart fruit (berries, citrus, apple), vinegar, clove and light oak. Taste adds notes of lemon juice, red wine, big cherry, vanilla, light sugar and some caramel. Light-medium body, moderate-low carbonation, creamy with tart fruit lingering. Almost perfect balance between tart, wood and rye notes. Excellent.

This is a world class sour. I get sour, sour, and more sour, with a slight vinegar aftertaste. The rye comes in slowly, but it’s there providing a great layering. Faint lemon juice, but this is a puckering masterpiece.

Full disclosure: I borderline slammed this after my shift was over. Wanted to get home, hadn’t seen my family in two days. Anywho. Russet, surprisingly clear pour, small off-white head. Oak, vinous notes on the nose, some tart cherry, leather. Leather fruit strips finish on the taste, Bordeaux wine, whiff of caramel malt. Really, really good.
