I had this on tap at The Bruery. This murky amber/brown pour has a complexity of flavors combining fruitiness and some caramel.

A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a two-finger thick, reasonably quickly dissapearing, pale amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated amber color that shows a lightly hazed, pale amber with red and gold tinged hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of dark, somewhat sweet, concentrated fruit character. This is backed by a nutty, toasted whole grain, spicy grain character, and caramelized malt aromatics.
Rich bodied, sweet, but not really cloying or overly thick; there is actually a certain lightness to this beer in the finish. Sweet date flavors have that earthy character that dates do in the finish. The earthy character mixes with toasted, nutty, caramelized, and earthy, spicy whole grain malt notes. There is just a hint of a bite in the finish, more from the malt and dates, than hop bitterness, but there is a bit of this as well that just becomes noticeable in the long finish.
Not bad, and an interesting, enjoyable dessert beer actually. I like that the dates add a definite character here, but that date flavors arenít all

Lightly hazy orange hued deep dark golden. Deep caramel aromas, touch of acetone, fig, date, alcohol heat, light butterscotch, light medium feel. A really wonderful beer thatís slightly flawed.

From notes. Tasted on 10/21/12 from a capped 750mL bottle. Pours light caramel brown with an average tan head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is caramel, date, raisin, and some alcoholic heat. The flavor is decently sweet with all of the caramel and dried fruit from the nose coming together nicely. The body is full and sticky with just lighter than average carbonation and a long caramel and date finish.

shared bottle with a friend. poured a murky brown amber colour with a small tann head. sweet caramel, malts, nuts, figs, biscuit, plums, sweet honey, cherrie, syrup, fruity flavor, sweet apple compot, lotís of flavors going on here. pretty tasty beer! i think the little bit of age has improved the beer. was expecting a bit more on the abv. but it was a pretty full bodied beer for 8.5% abv

A barleywine/stein hybrid brewed with date sugar. Nice body, quite sweet without being cloying with a dry, warming finish. Had a small sample and am looking forward to the 750 :)"

Specialty ale apparently made for a Californian brew pub with a fish restaurant attached to it. Off-white, coarse, quickly dissipating head, colour a deep and pure bronze, misty. Aroma nicely and refinedly perfumed, dates, raisins, chocolate, port wine, gingerbread, candi syrup, black pepper, wodka... Taste a rounded fruity sweetness in onset, but in a ícookedí and ísugaredí way (candied dates and figues, apple sauce), citrussy freshness vaguely present, then softly malty, chocolate and caramel, ginger-like spicy accents, in the finish a peppery hop bitterishness along with some warm, non-astringent alcohol. In terms of style, I would classify this as a top-fermented barley-wine interpretation of the old German Steinbier tradition, as it has apparently been caramelised with hot granite rocks.

Compact aroma of raisins, caramel, fudge and figs. The taste is similar with some traces of honey. A little sweet. Incredible beer!

It pours a dark orange color with virtually no head. Low carbonation. Sweet nose with caramel notes. Slightly medicinal flavor with a little mineral, burnt sugar, and a light fruitness. Weird. The alcohol is surprisingly evident at 8.5%.

Aroma: sweet and malty, candy, light earthy, caramel and burnt sugar, steinbier (well, what I remember from the only other one Iíve had).
Taste: same as in the aroma + zootablettask, juleknšck, fruity, light burnt.
Really nice actually.
