Tart of Darkness is a traditional stout that we aged in used oak barrels from The Bruery that had previously housed beers such as Cuivre™ or Black Tuesday®. We then brought them over to Bruery Terreux, added our special blend of souring bacterias and wild yeasts and watched nature take its course. The result is a perfectly tart yet awesomely dark and roasty, sour stout. Not a style you will see very often, and in our opinion, not a style seen often enough. This unique stout has notes of tart plums, roasted coffee, vanilla and oak.

1 PINT 9.4 FL. OZ bottle, 7% ABV, 2013 edition. Hueless black/brown, no head. Aroma of tart dark fruit, a whiff of dark roast. Taste is dominated by a sour dark fruitiness, notably plum, which pretty much smothers any other flavours. Soft carbonation, light-medium bodied, low hopped. Odd and easy but still: DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)

Must be aged because it still says 5.6% ABV. Dark cola brown hue with no head, and a pleasant tart earthy raisin and earthy lacto twang to it. Big sour flavor that’s nearly puckering, with some dark stone fruit and dark Belgian malts, like dates and raisin and a kiss of apricot but also really darkly sour and puckering and damn delicious with all that wild yeast eccentric fruitiness. Really pleasant and dark.

Bottle shared with friends. Poured a clear dark reddish brown purple. The aroma is tart citrus, biscuit doughy yeast. The flavour is moderate sour with a fresh, yeast, tart plum, roasty malt, light dry coffee, light chocolate palate. Moderate sour with average carbonation.

In my opinion, Bruery beers can be hit-or-miss and so can dark sours, so I was apprehensive before I opened this bottle. I shouldn’t have been, though, because this was sensational. It’s sour, leathery, dry, and a bit fruity. It’s complex without becoming either too malty or too acidic, and it was fantastic.

A very interesting beer. Pours a very dark cola, light beige head, decent lace. Aroma of sour smoke, wood and dark fruits. Dark (yet tart) raspberry with some roasted chocolate throughout, lemony notes.

Pours dark, black in glass, thin light tanned head. Smell of fruity dark malts, cherries, hints of funk and toast, caramel, some port and oak. Light sweet, tart berries, black currant, red currant, medium to heavy sour, fruity and tart, oaky with hints of toast. Moderate bitter, cherry stone tail. Very nice and complex

Dark cola-colored beer with a thin, nearly non-existent light beige head. Sour nose of root beer bottle cap candy, aged dark vinegar, and ripe plums. Flavor is quite sour and bracing with a bit of caramelized sweetness supporting it. Balsamic vinegar, hints of cocoa, lemon curd, wood, and even a bit of smoke vie for prominence, but everything is really secondary to a citric acid type sourness that coats the palate.
