COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We brewed a stout (no, not Black Tuesday, this one is only 5% abv if you can believe it), but we then decided to throw it into oak barrels...and added our special blend of souring bacterias and yeasts. The result is a perfectly tart yet awesomely dark and roasty sour stout. Not a style you see too often - and in our opinion, not a style you see often enough.
Originally part of the Provisions series.

Dark brown/black color; Medium body; Aroma of sweet malt, yeast, sour dark fruit, & some vanilla; Flavor of slight roasted sweet malt, yeast, oak, sour dark fruit (notably prunes & berries), some chocolate notes, and spice; Finish is dry & sour/tart; Nicely balanced; Overall, not overly complex - but I enjoyed.

Bottle. Very dark pour with a small, slightly ruby-tinged off-white head. Aroma of cherry tarts and burnt sugar. The sourness does not overpower the flavor - still get some stone fruit and chocolate in there. Good stuff.

Type: 750ml bottle (25.4 oz.) Glass: 26th anniversary Karl Strauss pint glass From: Beer Advocateís heresy22 Price: N/A Purchased: N/A; Received May 21, 2015 Consumed: June 27, 2015 Misc.: Bottled on May 1, 2014 Thanks Chris! Poured a mahogany (even purple?) opaque color with one finger of tan, rocky head, which thinned out right away. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.63) Smelled tart cherry, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, strawberry (wishful?), red apple, cider, faint plum, chocolate late, cocoa powder (I think), black cherry and faint sour milk. (Smell - 4.25) Tasted sour cherries up front, followed by tart on the tongue late, chewy sour ball candy, strawberry, red apple cider, purple grape, sour plum juice. Then (it really seemed like all of a sudden) I got some sugary chocolate, oak, light toasty malts, cocoa nibs and toffee. (Taste - 4.13) Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, astringent finish. (Feel - 3.88) This was very interesting. I got like 85 percent sour and 15 percent stout. Very sugary and sweet. I donít know how one could finish a whole bottle, but Iím going to try. (Overall - 4.13) 4.10 92 A-

Draft at SB. This keg is a year or two old at this point. Pours an opaque dark ebony, nearly black, with a dense and creamy but thin tan head that sticks around for a while. Big tangy balsamic nose with tons of sharp oak notes. More complex than the two descriptors would suggest. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Balsamic and oak duking it out on the mid palate, lots of subtle suggestions of vanilla, soy sauce, dark pitted tree fruit, and cedar. Long drying finish. Very nice, especially now with some time on it.

Bottle from Deconinck, Vichte - BE. Color: dark black beer with velvet reflection. No carbonation and no foam. Smell: nice sour domination balanced with roasted malt and really small caramel. Taste: very good balance of sour and roasted malt and caramel. Small grassy finish. Very nice beer. Aftertaste: sour and astringent sensation. Very nice! Amazing beer, well balanced between roasted malt and sour!

Dark purple mostly black body. Donít really care for the smell. Iím the only one getting this, but I get a grape cough medicine smell. Luckily, the taste was very good. No medicine. Tart sour roasty flavor. Mild oak flavor. Interesting to be drinking a sour stout.

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Violet Beauregarde meets a sticky end when trying a gobstopper which changes favour in the mouth to systematically represent each element of a three course meal. This beer does the same. Hold it in the mouth and you really do get a bit of everything. Before that, the nose gives you dark fruit, Brett sourness, milk chocolate and coffee. Tastes include blackcurrants, red wine, balsamic vinegar, wafers, cherry cola, sherbet lemons, lime, sour cherry and a touch of caramel. Chocolate Bourbon biscuits. Something like nettles too. Medium mouthfeel. Almost black with a rapidly vanishing light brown head. As a completely extraordinary, wacky, multi-faceted taste experience, Iíve not had anything quite like it. Itís not a stout. Itís a bit weird. I like it.

Bottle. Pours a near-black deep brown body with a miniscule off-white head. Nose is dark berries, figs, lactic sour notes, lemon juice, raisins, hints of grape peel, red fruits and barnyard funk. Taste is balsamic, vinegar, acetic notes, lemon juice, citric peel, raisins, brown bread and hints of rye, wood and red berries. Medium body and carbonation. Very nice and sour stout; the sour tones are potent and makes out the best of it while backed up by a subtle carpet of stout-ish tones in the back. Highly likable.

Another wonderful brew, lively co2 as expected from here. Garnet to dark fruits somewhat tart but not to overpowering. Lingering sour plum finish.

2013 bottle via and shared with oakbluff. Near back in colour with spitzy carbonation. Aromas are of cherry cola, funky brett, orange liqueur, and some mild roasted malt. Very "wild" tasting, with all sorts of herbal, cherry, red grape, roast, oak, and vinegar notes. Bright and savory on the palate. Complex yet harmonious.
