COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For our third beer in the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ series we decided to take a little creative liberty when approaching the barrel aged version. We were able to acquire an abundance of syrah grapes from the Santa Ynez Valley, which are full of rich, dark berry flavors and a wisp of black pepper which seemed almost too perfect for Three French Hens. The grapes were pressed and the juice was added to the beer which was then aged in wine barrels for one year. The result is a satisfyingly tart, dark ale with hints of oak and dried fruit that finishes with a clean, vinous character typical of a deep red wine.

Sweet lord jesus. Pours muddy and reddish brown with a thin head. Complex tart aromas with the slightest funk, smells absolutely amazing. Refreshingly tart, light cherries.

Bottle... Pours murky and brown with a brief, off-white head. Funky, sour aroma - oak, acidic red wine, caramel and sour cherry. Full-bodied with modest carbonation. The flavor is a balanced blend of sour notes, bitterness and roasted malts. Short, tart finish. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

750 mL bottle shared by Trey at Ale Alpharetta. Pours a dark, cloudy brown, with a thin film of tan head. The aroma is light chocolate, cloves, tart grapes, with only a hint of tannins. Sweet, with a mellow, vinous sourness. MEdium body, sticky, and fairly astringent. Overall, this is a nice, well-made dark sour, with good wine-ish notes, but doesn’t really seem that special.

Bottle shared by b3shine. Poured a cloudy reddish copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate to heavy sour dark fruit and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a dry smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sour & sweet fruit flavor with a medium to heavy sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer.

Murky reddish brown. Opened 12/25/13. Tart grapes on the nose, with a touch of oakyness as well. Big grape flavor, with a nice tartness and oak background.

750 ml bottle to snifter (shared by me; thanks JohnnyJ). Looks decent; a murky amberish brown with very thin light beige lacing. Smells good; sour and tart with notes of grapes. Tastes like it smells, only not quite as balanced. Solid on the palate. Enjoyable.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2013 Bottle. Murky, red wine and brown color with a few bubbles. Aroma is heavy on the red wine with nice complimentary tart underneath. Taste is heavy red wine grapes but there’s also a clean tart, lemon, grinding sour, and spice mixed in there as well. Relatively low carbonation but it works, Very nice high ABV sour with a very heavy wine character.

750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours a deep dark mahogany with a small off-white head. Aroma of red wine and grapes – very vinous but not tart at all. Flavour is extremely vinous, with loads of red wine, some dry musty grapes, and earthy notes. Almost none of the base beer is left. The vinous quality dominates. Almost flat carbonation, with a dominating dark vinous quality. Heavy on the palate, with a fairly high warming effect. Good, but nothing spectacular – a wine bomb.

Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy red color ale with a small foamy head with limited retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of red wine notes with light vinegar with sour grapes notes. Taste is dominated by tart notes from the grapes with some oak and some vinous notes with light residual sugar at the end. Acidity level is well balanced. There are also some funky notes which work more or less well with the rest of the mix. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Average sour available for a non-average price.

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber and ruby hue with medium beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is grape and funk. Medium mouthfeel with dark fruits, vinegar, and light tartness in the finish. A good sour from the Bruery.
