 Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s Good Food, was inspired to collaborate with Patrick Rue and The Bruery after enjoying a homemade Rhubarb Raspberry Pie. The rhubarb’s fruity sourness tempered with the sweetness of the fresh raspberries and the wheat crust, begged to be bottled up in the form of a bubbly beer. Keeping the original pie recipe in mind, specialty grains were chosen to mimic the crust, and rhubarb and  raspberries were used in varying stages of the brewing and fermentation process. The resulting beer is reminiscent of a fresh country pie, cooling on a farmhouse windowsill.

Pale hazy brown colour, white head. Aroma of raspberry, rhubarb, spices, sour notes. Sour flavour, light sweet, spices, pie. Sour finish.

Bottle. Pours hazy amber red, small fizzy off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly with out much lacing left behind. Aroma is light overall, fruity, some acetone, light funk. Flavor is quite acidic, tart, some raspberry and other fruit, a mineral water feel along with a biting tartness and acetone which does die off a little as the beer breathes and I get used to it. Medium body, low carbonation. Not one of their best.

Bottle shared by Douglas. Thanks! A: Cloudy red with a thin off-white head. N: Raspberry, cherry, rhubarb, even a hint of blackberry underneath. Grapefruit rind and oak. Some red licorice and green apple; vinegar. T: Tart and lightly sweet. M: Light body, crisp carbonation, alcohol does scratch the tongue. O: Nice sour. The raspberry and rhubarb take center stage here, though I wouldn’t quite compare this to pie. And since it’s the Bruery, it has their usual sharpness which, in this case, really ought to have been rounded off, I believe.

750 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy brown copper color with a medium white head. A big fruity oak strawberry nose. The flavor is big sweet tart berries, oak, rhubarb, tannins. Lively.

From my backlogg: RBESG 2014 in London, Sunday Tastinraisins aroma. g at Craft Clerkenwell. Clear amber beer with an offwhite head. Sourish fruity spicy floral vinous aroma. Sourish woody floral spciy citrus fruity flavour. A nice sour refreshing beer :-)

One of the few Bruery sours that sets itself apart. The differentiating quality is that the fruit comes through strong even though the tartness is dialed up. Nice clean finish.

(Bottled August 15, 2013) Bomber to tulip. Pours a dark, leathery red with a thin, light brown head. Aroma is acidic, with faint berry notes and a tart, lemony finish. Taste is sour, acidic, with lemon, berry, and tart rhubarb. For some reason this beer feels strangely chalk to me.

Bottle. Murky reddish brown pour with almost no head. Great aroma. Raspberry and rhubarb pie filling, light brett, light oak, and red wine vinegar. Taste is moderately sour. Pretty intense stuff. Lots of vinegar, acid, berries, rhubarb, and red wine. Very solid but it might be hard to finish a full glass.

Bottle: The aroma consists of consists of tart cherry, cola, lemon, and a hint of acetone. It pours transparent dark amber with a minimal off-white head that quickly fades to a very fine ring. The flavor starts with tart cherry, caramel, and cola. The finish has moderate sour lemon, sour cherry, and a touch of oak. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2015 Bottle: Thanks, Jason. Mahogany hazy pour with a quick fading beige head. Gone in moments. Aroma of red apple, raspberry, strawberry, & some mild lemon acidity. Flavor has notes of cherry skin, apple, strawberry, a hint of cherry, & some faint acidic lemon in the back-end. A touch of woody, tannic vinousness to finish things off. Acidity grows with time. Nice stuff.
