Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s Good Food, was inspired to collaborate with Patrick Rue and The Bruery after enjoying a homemade Rhubarb Raspberry Pie. The rhubarb’s fruity sourness tempered with the sweetness of the fresh raspberries and the wheat crust, begged to be bottled up in the form of a bubbly beer. Keeping the original pie recipe in mind, specialty grains were chosen to mimic the crust, and rhubarb and  raspberries were used in varying stages of the brewing and fermentation process. The resulting beer is reminiscent of a fresh country pie, cooling on a farmhouse windowsill.

Bottle shared over dessert. Pours a hazy red color. Nose is sour with some fruity notes; taste is shockingly sour. Fizzy mouthfeel. I admit I’m not a fan of sours, but I didn’t think this was very enjoyable.

750mL shared at Congregation Azusa. Pours a full haze, murky deep orange. Nose is squashy, cherry pie, caramel, sweet strawberry. Taste is tart, bright acid, big lime citric bite. Long lactic finish. Pretty solid, not enough rhubarb though.

750-ml bottle. Sharp nose of fresh, earthy rhubarb (almost like a wet garden) and tart raspberry with a slight mineral tone. Pours a hazy ruby color with nice effervescent nucleation. The first sip is very tart forward with sour rhubarb and lactic acid holding sway; a light fruitiness from the raspberries barely keeping the sourness in check. Raspberry jam becomes the prominent tone late. I get almost none of the intended pie crust flavor - just a touch of graham cracker. The mineral-water aroma is matched with a similar taste near the end. Light, refreshing mouthfeel; the alcohol is nearly non-apparent. Solid, but not spectacular.

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2013 A- pours a hazy reddish brown with a light tan and red gossamer head that leaves quickly. Virtually no lacing. S- raspberries, buttery crust, light malts, sugar, eggy funk, muddled citrus, cherries, rhubarb. Some grasses and salt air. Empty glass also smells of bees wax. M- light tart body with a light, acidic palate. T- grapefruit and lemon citrus with lemon heads and dry musty sour funk to start. Unripe, tart raspberries come on next with cherries, malts and butter. Sourdough bread, mineral water, raspberries, grasses and funk on the medium long end.

Hazy reddish amber-brown in color... Aroma of raspberry, oak, citrus tartness... Flavor is fairly tart, more so than expected, notes of rhubarb, oak, vanilla, caramel... Oak and tartness on palate... Really nice beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle, pours a hazy reddish color. sour notes on the nose. initial taste is VERY sour, like sour patch kids, takes your breath away a bit. as it warms the strawberry comes out a bit but still a bit too sour for my taste. Alcohol is hidden very well though. Would not buy again.

15 oct 2013, tap at the Bruery dark orange, almost clear. Nose is tart fruit and may very well have a pie crust malt nose. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Has a lot of raspberry tartness, some sour candy. Sets teeth on edge. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle, shared by dudeabide. Strawberry, fruity berry nose. Hazy darker red orange pink color. Thin, sort of bubbly khaki off-white head, loose bits of lace. Good tart taste, moderate sweet. Bigger body. Soft lighter carbonation, kind of sticky in the finish. Spicy berry flavor, very nice. Awesome fruit beer... Very much like fruit preserves, or indeed a fruity pie. Damn good stuff. Very drinkable for 10.5%..
