 Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s Good Food, was inspired to collaborate with Patrick Rue and The Bruery after enjoying a homemade Rhubarb Raspberry Pie. The rhubarb’s fruity sourness tempered with the sweetness of the fresh raspberries and the wheat crust, begged to be bottled up in the form of a bubbly beer. Keeping the original pie recipe in mind, specialty grains were chosen to mimic the crust, and rhubarb and  raspberries were used in varying stages of the brewing and fermentation process. The resulting beer is reminiscent of a fresh country pie, cooling on a farmhouse windowsill.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a hazy copper color with a tan head. The aroma was of strawberry, raspberry, light tartness, lemon and a bit of mustiness. The taste was of rhubarb, some light vanilla and a little tart, with some lemon and raspberry, strawberry, and seedy jam. Nice.

Bottle from RS membership. Aroma is tart raspberry and some rhubarb I guess. Flavor/palate hits you in the mouth with a very tart/sour, plasticky raspberry. Wasn't terribly impressed with this one. I didn't get any crust, and it wasn't sweet enough to pass as pie. Idk, don't call it a beer based on pie, and I like it better. Pretty good beer.

5000 (6300) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - NOV 26, 2013
Bottle:   Thick and dirty, reddish carmel, thin frothy white head, sparce lacing.   Tart yet sweet nose.   Seems a little like Raspberry jam before it gets its pectin sweetener.   Faint Rhubarb as well.   I can see this smelling like a pie, fer sure.   Bright and tart up front, acidic, vinegary, followed by the Rhubarb and Raspberry.   I would say Rhubarb dominates here.   Fairly dry, make that very dry.   Strong sweet vinegar with loads of acidity, almost bording on too much.   This would be one sour Pie!   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Faint sweetness underlies this beer, but the dry tartness of it really dominates.   Acidity is strong too.   Best take some extra antacid tonight!   Decent beer, but at times bordering on too much.

Bottle courtesy of hamilton23. Cheers, Steve! Pours a beautifully hazy orange with red highlights and white head. Nose is some sweet berries, rhubarb, some sweetness, and some lactic tartness with hints of sour fruit. Flavor is similar with some sweet pie fruit, some tart berries, some mild tartness, and some sweetness. Medium to full in body and well hidden alcohol.

Sampled at ESBLS. This is so hazy it is almost pulpy. Rusty gold? A sour fruity aroma speaks of wildness to come. Wild yeast is at the heart of this but it is actually fairly sweet. The fruit is hard to pinpoint. Tart. Kind of like cherries but not quite. Good stuff.

Poured at the tasting room as part of a flight. Murky brownish Coe with some light khaki head. Aroma is sour, with some extra fruity funk that I was not a huge fan of. Flavor follows with some light sour notes, a bit vinegar, and a funkiness from the rhubarbs. I don't get much raspberry in this one, and I am not sure I like the other flavor influence. A little cheery for an acidic sour, light carbonation. Strange, but not unpleasant.

Aroma: Grainy Wheat, Raspberries, Rhubarb Appearance: Brownish/Ruby Hue, Passes Mild Light, Pink Head that quickly dissipates, No Lacing Taste: Rhubarb, Raspberries, Cranberry Mouthfeel: Mediocre Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Tart, Mildly Bitter

Bottle shared over dessert. Pours a hazy red color. Nose is sour with some fruity notes; taste is shockingly sour. Fizzy mouthfeel. I admit I’m not a fan of sours, but I didn’t think this was very enjoyable.

750mL shared at Congregation Azusa. Pours a full haze, murky deep orange. Nose is squashy, cherry pie, caramel, sweet strawberry. Taste is tart, bright acid, big lime citric bite. Long lactic finish. Pretty solid, not enough rhubarb though.
