3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Taster on tap at the brewery during RBSG. Kind of a hazy red brown color. Nice thin khaki head. Leaves decent bits of lace. Good toasty nutty chocolatey malt bill. Light spiciness, some toasty english style character. Light to moderate bitter, moderate sweet. Light to medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Solid, sessionable brown. I couldn’t help but think it tasted pretty english-style, though.

On draught at the brewery.
Pours a dark reddish brown with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.
The aroma is roasty with some coffee and chocolaty notes. Lightly hoppy and lightly nutty.
The flavor is roasty and nutty with a good coffee character. It’s got a decent level of hop bitterness and fruity character.
This brown ale lifts!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2014 Draft… RBSG 2014... Hazy dark-brown pour with mahogany highlights and a brief, white head. The aroma is loaded with coffee and provides just enough chocolate to create an excellent mocha character. Full-bodied with tickling carbonation. The flavor is rich and roasty with heaps of hearty mocha and a slight caramel component. Lengthy coffee finish with a light kiss of butterscotch in the aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
tap@ brewery during RBSG 2014: Slightly hazy brown with a firm white head and okay lace. Nutty, caramel, faint chocolate and roasted coffee along with light handed but noticeable resiny fruity hop juxtaposition. Yep it is indeed an American Brown Ale in all it’s glory. Tossup between this and the Milk Stout for my carry out... the Milk Stout won in extra time.

On tap @ The Civil Life. Brown in color with an off-white head. Nose of roasted malt, cocoa powder, and coffee. Quite earthy and a touch spicy. Sort of bittersweet on the palate. Roast, burnt nuts, chocolate, and earthy hops. A little bit of grass. Good toffee and molasses as well.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The St. Louis locals seemed pretty enamored with this beer and for good reason. It is a great beer. It is amber to brown in the glass and the head leaves lots of lace as it slowly dissipates. The nose is earthy, herbal hops. There is a great depth to the malt character w/o being sweet, which I feel is something only very good brewers ever achieve. It is light bodied w/o being watery and finishes w/ a firm earthy bitterness. This would definitely be a regular purchase if I could make it to the brewery regularly.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft on tap at the brewery (St. Louis, MO). RBSG 2014 Friday Bus Tour. Pours a deep chestnut brownish pour with deep darker middle, gentle orange brown glow with frothy tannish head, dies to a decent ring and laces ok. Aromas are brown malts, earthy with a touch of cocoa and earth. Gentle carmelized elements grow with touches of toast, earth and mellow soil. Initial is medium bodied, a touch lighter with some toast, gentle earthiness. Semi sweet middle is a bit of caramel, cocoa and earth. Sweeter toffee moves out to a more dry, toasty backend. Earthy hops, some dryness, lingering cocoa and faint hit of brown sugar. More dry and toasty as we finish up, running the gambit and bringing it home. While Brown Ales can be a bit boring, this one certainly hits all the checkpoints. Solid. Pretty pour.
