3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample at Bridge Tap House & Wine Bar. The beer pours a hazy dark amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roast malt, hops and rye in the nose. Light-bodied with flavors of spicy hops and toasted malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a rye bread and hops aftertaste. Decent all around.

Had this at their tap room in saint Louis Fall 2012. Everything I tasted was good to great. Pour a dark amber. Somewhat peppery and a bit fruity. Nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Civil Life. Pours a hazy amber with a nice off white head. Taste is caramel and a little coffee in the aroma. Taste shows rye crispness on top of their srandard pale ale (which is excellent) and true to the English style. Also some nuttiness is detected. Great stuff!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Half pint pour at the source... Pours a dark caramel amber hue, mostly transparent, and topped with at in frothy white head... Toasty caramel and bread, leafy greens and grass. More malt than expecting... Semi-sweet caramel malt with hints of biscuit and a light spicy bread backing. Was expecting atouch bigger bitterness or hop profile. Malts seem to dominate this and leave a bit of desire based on the American pale moniker. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tasted on draft at the brewpub in a nonic half pint, then filled a growler to bring home which says a lot. It appeared a clear, deep amber colour (not sure why they call it "Pale Ale") with full, fluffy white head of foam and lasting lace. Grainy, light marshmallowy pils-like aromas, faintly fruity, with well-balanced citrusy and floral hops. Very nice, rounded flavors: malty sweet, chewy caramel candies, tangy marmalade hops notes, grapefruit and pine resin but not overwhelmingly so. Medium body and carbonation, slightly bready mouthfeel, nicely complimented by the subtle sharpness and black-pepper spice which comes from rye, and a lingering bittersweet aftertaste. Another delicious--albeit deceptively named--brew from Civil Life, my favorite in town.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
(pint at brewpub) dark amber (dark for a pale ale). Malt and some rye in the aroma. Flavor is toasty malt, some rye spice, and some grassy hops in the finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Has that peppery malt character that is so often promised by that word "rye" and so rarely delivered. Has a friendly bitterness and some fruity hop flavor as well, but none of it overdone. A solid drinking beer with plenty of character.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft 8 oz’er at the brewpub. Dark bronze with a bubbly head. Starkly bitter with a bit of smokiness to it -- my sister called it "burnt". The flavor works with a nice rich malt base, but this falls a bit too thin to support any robustness in the flavor. (#4492, 2/25/2012)

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted 10/29/11. Pint from the Brewpub. Pours filtered with a caramel brown hue. Bubbled, bone white head. Aromas of caramel and brown sugar. Medium bodied with a solid malt bill. Medium roasted and toasty malts. Mildly burnt with a tasty rye bitterness. Mildly tart and tangy. Tastes very fresh and crisp. The finish is sticky and cloying to offset the dry malt flavors. Subtle cinnamon and peppery note. Mild cola sweetness and faint hops. Solid drinker!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours dark brown with a mahogany hue and tan head. The aroma has spicy rye, toasty malt and some hoppiness. This strikes me as being between a brown ale and pale ale. Medium / light body with light carbonation. The flavor starts with dry toasty malt, spicy hops, some rye and a bit of nuttiness. The finish has more rye spice, cracker and dry nuttiness. Really nice beer.
