British ales are truly among the best in the world, and of those, "Best Bitters" are among the…well, best of all. This one falls in the same broad category as our English Pale Ale, but is even more authentic and earthy. Bready and biscuity. Grassy, woodsy, with hints of herbal tea. Some subtle peppery spice, orange peel and ripe stone fruit notes. Deep colour, deep flavour, deep satisfaction. Tame enough to drink a few, tasty enough you’ll want to.

ABV: 4.5%
IBU: 30
Colour: mostly clear deep amber with persistent white foam, tight little bubbles and lots of fine lace
BJCP Style: 8B. Special/Best/Premium Bitter
Notable Ingredients: authentic Maris Otter and CaraStan malts, Goldings and lots of Fuggles hops, English ale yeast

Tasted at brewery. Bready. As nutty as it is bitter (hint: quite). Hazy copper. Caramel. Really malty. Nice beer.

Tasted on tap at the brewpub in a nonic half-pint glass. It poured a mostly clear deep amber with thin but persistent white foam, tight little bubbles and lots of fine lacing. Nice English ale aromas: grainy, earthy, mildly citrusy, faint ripe fruit esters. Intensely biscuity flavour, toast, caramel. Nice bready mouthfeel, just the slightest bit chalky with tea-like tannins. Medium body and carbonation, lingering multi-layered aftertaste. A near perfect session beer, a primordial pleasure.

tap at brewpub october 2011-pours dark amber with a small slightly off white fizzy head. nose is slightly nutty, spicy and some metallic qualities. a lite husky cereal note was also apparent. flavors exhibit the husky qualities mostly with a touch of carmel and nuts. not a bad brew. simple, clean and straight forward.

On tap at the brewpub - Pours deep brown with a large soapy beige head. The aroma has smooth toasty malt and dry caramel / toffee. Medium crisp grainy body with modest carbonation. The flavor has dry caramel malt, some crackers and mineral traits The finish is quite dry. Really nice for the style.

It poured a copper color with a white head. The aroma was minor caramel and a some herbal hops. The taste was a about the same. Feel is relatively light with good carbonation. A very decent ESB.

Draft at the brewery. Labeled "English Best", 4% ABV. Pours a nice cloudy amber color with a finger-thick off-white head that leaves some lace in the glass. Aroma of toasted barley malts, grassy hops, cereal, and Cream of Wheat. Flavor of grassy hops, orange peel, cereal, earth, and toast. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, subtly bitter mouthfeel. Really nice ESB. I enjoyed this one better than the English Bitter, the Gold one at 4.2%.
