Dry Stouts are to Espresso as Milk Stouts are to Macchiatos. Milk Stouts begin just as many Stouts begin - with Pale type Malts coupled with Roasted Malts for color and bite. The addition of Lactose sugar is what gives a Milk Stout its je ne sais quois- joke sorta stolen from Steve Martin. Lactose sugar isnít really fermented by yeast the way other sugars are and it remains in the brew as a modifier. Lactose gives a light sweetness without being cloying and I think a nice silkiness to the beer as well. At 4.4% you can have a few and decide if Iím right and you can really get into my sorta-stolen Steve Martin Joke.

Pours jet black. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, cocoa. Flavor is creamy, milk chocolate, but drier and smoky.

Interesting. Has really good characteristics of high alcohol but itís a session beer. Civil Life is very good at session beers that have non-session character. Should try and see what I mean. Good job civil life.

Pour is a black with almost no head at all. Aroma is not real big. Some roasted malt but thatís about it. Flavor is better with a nice roast and coffee. Finish is dry and leaves a bit of the char on the tongue. Maybe a bit thin but is has plenty to offer. Dryer than most milk stoutís Iíve had.

On tap at Shamrocks. Served a dark brown/black color with a small tan head that faded to nominal bits of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, and a bit of caramel. Taste of roasted malt, milk chocolate, just a touch of coffee and caramel sweetness. Light bitterness and finish has a bit of lingering sweetness. Fairly medium body, bit thin for a stout, smooth and quite creamy. Decent beer for the style.

Black. Not too much head. Sweet. Quite roasted. Coffee. Fairly heavy. Kind of hard to drink.

A bit thin for a stout, but still well bodied. Pour was pitch black with tiny caramels where the light breaks through the corners. Dark caramel and chocolate flavors, but a bit too much smoke leaning towards a porter. Flavor has a bit of toffee.

Had this at their tap room in saint Louis Fall 2012. Everything I tasted was good to great. This was too sweet. Some chocolate and mild roast.

It smelled of chocolate and some sweetness. Good cocoa taste with some creamy sweetness. A very light bitterness. Also, a very very light aftertaste of mint.

Tap @ The Civil Life. Pours a dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Milky, light caramel, salty chocolate aroma. Burnt malty, lightly milky, coffee, chocolate, light toffee, cola flavor. Pass.

On tap at The Civil Life. Pours a black color color with white head. Roasty, light coffee, chocolate flavor. I donít get a lot of milk in this one. The Oatmeal Stout is better.
