Dry Stouts are to Espresso as Milk Stouts are to Macchiatos. Milk Stouts begin just as many Stouts begin - with Pale type Malts coupled with Roasted Malts for color and bite. The addition of Lactose sugar is what gives a Milk Stout its je ne sais quois- joke sorta stolen from Steve Martin. Lactose sugar isnít really fermented by yeast the way other sugars are and it remains in the brew as a modifier. Lactose gives a light sweetness without being cloying and I think a nice silkiness to the beer as well. At 4.4% you can have a few and decide if Iím right and you can really get into my sorta-stolen Steve Martin Joke.

Pour on tap at the brewery, thick black pour with tan head, aroma has roast, cocoa, lactose/creamy notes, hints of coffee/espresso, nice caramel and vanilla notes as well. Taste is a mix of vanilla, grass, roast, hints of dark fruit, nice lactose into some chocolate/cocoa powder, finishing sweet, thick. Nice for 4.4%.

Bottle... RBSG... Pours black with a small, creamy, off-white head. Nutty, chocolaty bouquet. Medium-bodied with buzzing carbonation. The flavor offers deeply roasted malts and light lactose sweetness. Carbonic, ashy finish.

On Draught at the brewery

Pours basically black with a good head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is roasty & mild with some chocolate and some espresso.

The flavor is chocolaty with a touch of sweetness. The roasty malt is pretty dominant and I get a touch of smokiness from it as well. The beer has a little metallic tinge.

Thinking about it logically I love everything about this beer, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants, and when I was drinking this, I sort of didnít want it.... but sort of did, weird

On tap @ The Civil Life. Black pour with a tan head. Nose of roast, licorice, and toasted nuts. Slight vanilla, coffee, and dark chocolate. Nice dark fruit. Slight bitterness to the flavor. Lots and lots of roasted malt. Coffee, cocoa powder, some ash, and sweet dark fruit. Nice vanilla and molasses. Liked this one.

On tap during RBSG and now from the howler I took back to Indiana: Pours nicely deep brown with a fading head and not much lace. A nice SESSION sweet stout with roast, bread, faint chocolate and coffee, light handed noble hops notes. Some raisin and plum undertones too. Smooth and thin but pretty much is spot on for the genre. A hint of dark fruit too and at 4.4% ABV you can start at 11 in the morning.

This is a very dark brown beer. Itís head is white and fine bubbled. This is a nice drinkable milk stout. It is just sweet enough to bring out a bit of chocolate from the roasted grains. I am not a huge fan of the style but this one was tasty and drinkable.
