Our Biere de Garde was inspired by the farmhouse beers brewed in Northern France and brewery friend Steve Jones, proprietor and cheesemonger at Cheese Bar. Steve was lamenting the dearth of food-friendly Biere de Gardes and we took that as a cue to develop a beer that would fill the gap. Traditionally, Biere de Garde was brewed in Winter and early Spring while the climate was cooler, then garded (lagered) during the cool months, and reserved for consumption during the summer. This beer offers a soft and clean, malt forward flavor with a reserved hop profile.

@ Commons, Porland 16-3-11: En ganska enkel red ale med toner av malt. Inte fŲr sŲt men heller lite intetsšgande.

On tap at the Brewpub. A bit hazy amber with a white head. Aroma and taste of yeast, "tutti-frutti", some fruit and light grass. Nothing special.

On tap at The Commons. Pours a dark orange with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is orange peel, yeast, spice. Medium mouth, strong orange zest, light spice, dry finish, very good.

A very refreshing beautiful beer. Pours a bright cloudy orange with a white head. Smells very floral, with rose and some pine nuts. Taste is carbonated, with lemon and apple and more rose. Had on tap at the brewery.

Bottle: Poured a light amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with some good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with light bready notes is OK. Taste is also dominated by bready notes with some dry caramel malt notes and a grainy finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. OK for style but falls a bit short on complexity and I donít think I would been seeking this on a regular basis.

Bottle. Itís rare I hit this style since Iím not a huge malt-forward drinker, so take this (like anything I say ever) with a fat grain of salt. No shade though! This is good. Pours a hazy orange. Deep, rich malt aroma. Grains and nuts and cereal, plus caramel and just a touch of hops (donít know the date but this isnít new... These havenít been on the shelves for months). Drinks balanced, lively and clean. This is clearly well-made and made me more interested in malty beers. Unexpected complexity. Surprised how much I enjoy this but shouldnít be granted the pedigree, Flemish Kiss was a fave this summer (tho itís gone baby gone here).

"This golden ale has a rustic malty grainy base. The aroma and flavor give you subtle hopping and a clean crisp herbal bite. Easy drinking & refreshing. About middle o the road for them."

Mostly clear amber with a light lasting head. Ligh hop grain smell. Malt forward but thin and crisp. A light hop bitter. mouth left with a light sweet grain coating.

Pours a fairly deep amber orange color. Looks a bit murky but easy to see through. Iím guessing thereís a fair bit of yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. The head is small to medium in size, white and relatively sticky. Aroma is light caramel malt, herbal hoppiness, mint, grapes, apple cider and some earthiness. The malt seems sweet with a fair bit of caramel and a somewhat bready character. Lots of that grapey, appley sweetness, which is not entirely pleasant. The taste is sweet, herbal and earthy. More apple cider sweetness. The malt flavor could be a lot fuller. Itís a bit stale and lifeless. Itís slightly too sweet. Something about it needs to be cleaned up. Itís a touch cloying, though too thin to really go too far in that direction. The mouthfeel is fairly effervescent and almost light but the sweetness gives a sense of body in a funny way. I donít much like this one. I wouldnít call it a very clean beer, which is advertised on the label. That apple cider sweetness gets to me and kills most of the refreshment that I was expecting. That said, itís not bad. The hops seems nice - wish they were a bit stronger - and I appreciate anyone attempting a Biere de Garde.
