On tap at fat head Portland pub. Pours out a crisp brown topped with a sand head. Nose is floral and lots of perfume. Taste is more of the perfume and a nice malt bill.

Draft @ Rogue Broadway. Light brown. Spicy, floral nose and palate. Good balance, gentle dark sugar, good spicy brew.

On tap at Tin Bucket - Pours brown with a tan head. The aroma has lots of bright herbal spices, very leafy and fresh with some saison style earthiness. It has a medium crisp body with mild carbonation. The flavor starts with a very weird mix of spices that seem all over the place to me. The finish seems to be a bit of a different mix of spices, but still seems scattered to me. It is dry and somewhat off-putting to me. I love The Commons a lot, but this one just isn’t for me.

Bottle - Big Hibiscus and Lavender notes off the bat. Floral and herbal. Deep dark and black with a foamy rich beige head. Malty, grassy, sweet herbal notes. Odd to be sure, the floral notes with the malts are strange.

On tap at Tin Bucket. I haven’t had this since last year, when it was...not good. A: Pure black, thin white head. N: Eucalyptus, lemon and grapefruit rind, medicine, some leather, wine grape, lavender, chamomile, tobacco, licorice, and star anise. T: Sweet, sour, very lightly bitter. M: Light body, crisp biting carbonation. O: Much better than last year; it’s closest comparison (and they’re still quite different) is the 2014 batch of Upright’s Special Herbs. This one is either up your alley or bound to weird you out, though.

Bottle... Pours murky and dark brown with a small, creamy, mushroom-colored head. Decent retention. The aroma is slightly reminiscent of root beer – sarsaparilla, English lavender and milk chocolate mingle nicely. Medium-bodied and raspy with vibrant carbonation. The flavor is roasty, earthy, herbal and rooty, flanked by a tongue-numbing, cocoa finish. Bottle courtesy of newcigarz!

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Dark brown color, almost black, with compact brownish head. Tastes like a soapy Stout; there are some roasted malts, a minty touch, rosemary, sage, soap.
Not very pleasant. The beer soul has been twisted too much.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a dark amber with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out loads of spices and grains, with notes of chamomile and rye-like grains. Flavour is very spicy and oddly pleasing, with chamomile, spelt / rye, and some lightly tart herbal notes. I’m not usually one for weird spiced beers like this, but I quite enjoyed this. Well-designed and cohesive.

Theydon_Bois (12569) - Tourist Town (West), Berkshire, ENGLAND - NOV 18, 2014
Keg at the brewery, 09/11/14. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a moderate light tan spotting and edgework. Nose is dark fruit rinds, earthy, barnyard, spice, biscuit. Taste comprises marjoram, spice, dark fruit rinds, ginger tinge, herbals. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid work.

"Dug the combo of florals going in here - one of my favorite commons brews. Chamomile hibiscus and lavender in equal measure with a farmhouse yeast. Light and refreshing but with a lot going on."
