Lacto-fermented Saison with Meridian hops

3fourths' rating

3fourths (8214) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUL 6, 2013
Draft at the brewery. Hazy golden wheat with a fine white head. Stale grains, wheat and lactic acid throughout. Strangely milky with cereal grain flavor (Cheerios) with chalky, silty, pasty yeast. Resembles berliner weisse but without wheat. As it opens the acidity and milky sourness becomes difficult to handle, and it creeps over into stomach bile / vomit territory. There’s some dried fruit character as well, could be from hops or the tropical yeast esters, I’m not sure, but it does give it a distinct sour patch kid candy flavor. Lightly sweet, grainy, chalky, lactic and messy.

Hazy gold pour blanket of head. Aroma of lemons dusty ozone, butter, zinnias. Tastes lemon cough drop, minerals, sweet tarts. No residual sugar very refreshing. A bit sharp on the tongue.

Cloudy gold pour, white head. Nice funk and sourness hits up front followed by some tropical fruit notes and light hoppiness. Neat beer. The Commons is a bad ass brewery

Bottle, another winner from The Commons. Lacto tartness and funk obvious on the nose, and I think there must be some brett in here too contributing some fruity qualities. Or maybe that’s just the Meridian hops and their fruit punch goodness? Taste is strongly tart but cleans up in the finish. Lacto funk lingers a bit, a touch of cereal too. Nice sour at 5.2% -- eminently drinkable.

marcus (6692) - Sacramento, California, USA - OCT 26, 2014
Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours blonde with a rich white head and a lemon aroma. There is a moderately sour light malt flavor with a distinct brett note and a tart finish that sticks to the palate.

Hazy dull straw. Aroma is fruity like fig, hibiscus, some overripe fruit stuff. Way tart, sweet like those sweet-tart candies. Now, bog myrtle was traditionally a bittering agent but this is more sour than bitter.

Ferris (4748) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - OCT 24, 2014
Bottle - Nice light funky sourness with some stone fruit. Hazy gold with a light bubbly white head. Tart and funky right off the bat, but a clean easy finish. Really refreshing and light, very easy drinking.

Real brettnomyces aroma. Golden in color with a thick foam. Very tart. Some lacto. Body is light with lemon and citrus. Soured finish but not too overpowering.

TheAlum (5833) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - OCT 13, 2014
GABF 2014 Rating (Denver, CO). Pours a pale yellow hue, decent haziness, frothy creamy offwhite head stays as a firm layer, ok lacing and stick around. Aromas are a bit bitter and citric, decent hops show some pineapple, lemon and florals. Gentle earth, mellow spiciness, touches of lemon. Initial is a bit citric, gentle tartness meets lemon, earth, a gentle bitterness. Touches of green apple, bread and earthiness. Subtle spice and coolness into the backend. Touches of pineapple, bitter florals and a touch of pine. Some more citrus, bigger lemony and lime slant at the backe. A touch yeasty, gentle eatrh. Nice stuff. Quite interesting. Smell a bit mellow but flavors are really on.
