3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at SB. We kicked the Stivo, and the managers called a huddle of customers at the bar. Do we put on the Commons next, or the Happy Little Clouds? Ordinarily, HLC would win hands down, but a couple of us were curious to try this one. Turns out I’d already had it a year and a half ago, but hadn’t rated it. Bad RBian, bad. Rate the pils. Rate the pils or else it gets the Chelada again. Anyway, here we go. Pours a crystal clear medium gold with tons of steadily rising nucleation columns (not quite columns, but, still, so active) and a frothy platinum-blond head that sticks around forever. Forward grassy nose--the very picture of the warm summer meadow, the heath, where possibility seems boundless. Oh, shut up. It’s grassy. Whatever. Creamy medium body with lively (as expected) carb. Lightly toasty mid palate. Grassy notes all over the place. Mild dry finish. Doesn’t have quite the clarity or pop of the two pils surrounding it, which perhaps shades it in an unfairly unfavorable light. It’s essentially flawless, but the pils race isn’t getting any easier on anybody. Being clean isn’t enough anymore. You need great design to carry a pils across the finish line, even on an 84F day in the PNW.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft. Cloudy, foamy. This is not a hop-bomb American pilsner, not by a long shot. Tastes more like a lager. Very dry.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at the brewery. Lightly hazed gold with a short white head. Aroma is lightly malty and minimally hoppy, smelling husky and starchy with only quiet touches of lemon / herb noble hops. There’s a strong saw dust quality that I just can’t get past. Medium-light bodied, lightly sweet with medium bitterness. Silky / creamy texture and soft carbonation but the ingredient expression is poor and the huskiness limits the appeal for me. Indistinct and bland.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tap at the Commons.
A: Clear straw color, thin white head.
N: Pilsner malt, grist, pine, earth, and cracker. Dull hop leaves.
T: Sweet and bitter. Not too clean, however.
M: Light body, spritzy carbonation, no alcohol.
O: A bit of a muddy beer. I prefer something far cleaner and more drinkable.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
"Classic bready pils. Sharp carbonation, cereal, grass and hay. A bit of a bite on the back end. Good balance between slightly sweet malts and herbal hops... 2014 even better."
