GAManiac (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep, clear amber with a huge fluffy white head that hangs around for a long time leaving sporadic clumps of lacing. The smell is very sweet, almost like caramel apples, with a big malt backbone and some dark fruits and brown sugar as well. The taste is just as sweet with a huge caramelized malt backbone and fruits mixed in. There is also just a hint of sour in there which seem a little out of place. There is a noticeable spiciness to the taste as well with a faint hop presence at the very end. The mouthfeel is a tad thin with huge carbonation and a slightly sticky finish. This a decent amber though though the taste is a little bit too unbalanced to be top notch.
JCB (1000), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 16, 2008 12oz bottle from Total Wine, Durham. Full disclosure: I’m not really big on ambers these days, but I figured I’d give DR’s a try after a long spell. Very handsome pour, crisp and lively carbonation bringing the copper brew to life. The aroma is actually a bit nutty, with mild fruity notes in there among the expected malts. Playful on the tongue, very much more hops than I’d expected, and they combine nicely with the nutty flavors. Good one. dwyerpg (2042), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 14, 2008 A weird apple or banana in the aroma. there is something not right with this bottle. I has hops in the finish, but overall the flavor seems a bit off; damaged. kmweaver (1971), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 9, 2008 12oz bottle, kindly given to me at BCTC by FrumptyDumpty. Thanks again, Ryan! Pours a clear, amber brown color; light tan head with decent retention and solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Good amounts of nougat, dried fruits, and caramel in the aroma; solid, nougaty nose. Medium, malt-driven mouthfeel: again, nougats, caramel, and lightly roasted malts upfront; some light citrus acidity at the tip of the tongue; touch of chocolate at the core; solid, enjoyable maltiness overall; the balancing mineral bitterness appears after a few sips. Definitely strikes me as more of a nicely hopped brown ale than an amber, but drinkable and reasonably tasty in any case. Medium finish: bready malts, toastiness, and a bit of chocolate and very light roast. Optigon (547), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 7, 2008 Pours amber wih a VERY large head. Clean, hoppy aroma. Flavor is malty and rather bourbon-like. Moderate mouth fee. Pastor (253), Maine, USA Jul 31, 2008 Thanks MuenchenerKindl for this one
Bottle poured into a pint glass produced a good three fingers worth of off with head that lasts .the body was darkish amber with a slight haze
Aromas of sweet roasted grains, bread yeast and a slight floral hop note filled my nose
Sweet flavors start off with this one then it goes to a distinct bitter but ends with roasted malts almost a burnt taste. Medium mouthfeel with just enough carbonation to keep it enjoyable
I have wanted to try this one for a while. Not a bad Amber but not my favorite either nor one of the best I have had from this brewer. Average drinkability
