SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Oct 25, 2009 Bottle thanks to mcbackus: Poured a black brown with a light brown head. The aroma is chocolate, roasted malt, and dark fruits. Taste is bitter bakers chocolate and roastedness. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Oct 17, 2009 Pours with a black body topped by a thin head with some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with lots of raisin and bourbon notes as well as a slight sourness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch warming. brewolf (29), Washington, USA Oct 13, 2009 Gorgeously dark brown/black pour with a lasting, frothy head. Aroma is immense and full of sweet plum, roasted malt, and a bit of smoke. Flavor is equally bold with notes of cappuccino in addition to the aromatic elements. Palate is quite smooth with a slight alcohol bite at the back. It may be picky, but dropping the alcohol 1% would have made this almost perfect. The flavors and richness push towards that of an imperial stout, which makes me wonder, but ...
Certainly one of the most enjoyable Baltic Porters I have had the chance to experience. joeneugs (282), Livermore, California, USA Oct 10, 2009 Thanks Ucusty for this treat! Pours black with a fizzy disappearing orange head. Aroma is chocolate, maple syrup, dark fruit, and a touch of roast. The flavor is very rich and fruity, with a little tang. Also sweet, with orange, strawberries, and plums. Some chocolate flavor as well and a nice roasted malt quality in the finish. Almost no bitterness. A great flavor in a great beer. The mouthfeel is fantastic too. Thick and velvety smooth. Like molasses. Loved this beer. derekbrown (16), Greenville, North Carolina, USA Oct 5, 2009 Beautiful. Glorious mouth-feel and beautiful color. Keeps its head quite nicely. Much better than their Milk Stout in my opinion... petematte46 (212), Dallas, Texas, USA Oct 4, 2009 Dark brown pour, thick looking, thin tan head dissipates quickly. Lots of chocolate in the aroma, roasted and smoked malt, and some lactic acid. The flavor is both bitter and sweet, mostly chocolate, caramel, coffee, some burnt malt in the finish. drowland (1337), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Oct 3, 2009 From a bottle into an English pint glass. Pours quite dark with pretty much no head, but the ringlet is dark brown. The flavor is quite sweet and a bit sour, almost like lemon flavored molasses. The finish and exhale are deep roast and dark chocolate malts. The aroma is sweet with an alcohol burn and overall reminds of various fortified wines. With some warmth a solid touch of smoke comes through as well. zug4abby (287), San Diego, California, USA Oct 1, 2009 Bottle from Ohiodad I got in November 2006 in a trade, I’m excited to see how the beer has aged. Pours an opaque dark brown color with a very minimal dark tan head. Aroma is raisin/bourbon dominated with a slight note of toasted malt in the background. Slight smokiness if the nose as well. Flavor is extremely sweet, lots of raisin- like a barleywine. Seems past it’s prime in the flavor. Very slick on the palate, another sign of age/infection (I think it’s age more than anything). I liked this beer the first time I had it, but it’s not very representative of a baltic porter at this point in the aging process. And as a side note, I stored the beer in my cellar (which is kept at 60F).
