hellbilly (940), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Feb 18, 2008 Updated: May 3, 2008 bottle 2007 courtesy of ucusty... almost viscous dark brown pour topped by a small brown head with purple and orange tints. the head fades quickly to a thin film. the aroma is fruity, sour, chocolate, wood, coffee, licorice, malt powder, something meaty and a bunch of sweetness. alcohol jumps out and singes my nose. the flavor is all sugar and alcohol... not cloying but enough to hide the nuances. along with all the sugar there’s also hints of chocolate, smoke, dark raisins, vanilla and a huge dose of unpleasant sourness. it finishes surprisingly dry and leaves behind a fruity coffee/astringent aftertaste. medium bodied with a light mouth feel from the high level of carbonation. 7/4/7/3/17=3.8

2006 bottle by way of kenb... thick brown pour with a brownish orange head which fades to nothing rapidly. licorice and malt powder dominate the nose. sweetness and chocolate aromas play a secondary role. the licorice really becomes noticeable as does a molasses note. the unpleasant sourness has faded a bit but it still makes itself known. nice dry finish with chocolate in the aftertaste. this is notably smoother than the fresh bottle but i’m not sure how since there’s nothing in the bottle. it’s had a chance to mesh and settle down?7/4/8/4/17=4.0
CheersMate1 (318), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 30, 2008 This thing has the appearance of a good imperial stout. I was very impressed. Opaque, and a nice thin chocolate colored head sitting on top. Whoa, this made my Saturday night, forget the ladies, right guys!? This beer is too one sided for me. It is all about the roast. I don’t think the description is misleading. I am actually glad that I didn’t pay for a 6-pack and found this in a mix-a-six section of Green’s. The beer has a weak aroma of roast. It also has some sweet aroma, but not much. I am not impressed because this thing is not that pungent to me. I am not sick, so it is not my nostrils. I can say this is a nice creamy beer. The alcohol really comes out with the roast which is a nice combo. I like this roast taste. I just think it is too one sided. There is some slight coffee, and chocolate taste, but the damn roast is taking over my life at this moment. The sweet flavor really comes out at first, but the other flavors quickly kick in. Overall, I think the beer is nice, but just focuses too heavily on the roast. As for a "sipping beer" I don’t know I need something a little more harsh to stop. I would say that for a Baltic Porter, and I have only had 2, this was the better one. Brewbie (136), Pine City, New York, USA Nov 29, 2008 12oz bottle. deep dark black color with a small dark tan head. wow. huge aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. taste is silky smooth and full, big chocolate and roast. this is delicious. almost too sweet at first with just a taste of alcohol in the finish that comes out as it warms. great sipper on a cold winter night. gift from my daughter home for the holiday. chandler0201 (135), Durham, North Carolina, USA Nov 27, 2008 Pours dark black with minimal head. Aromas of chocolate and molasses. Thick and full bodied. Smooth finish with hint of alcohol, excellent as typical of duck-rabbit seasonals.
