COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Duck-Rabbit Hoppy Bunny American Black Ale is both intensely hoppy and intensely BLACK! Eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a spongy beige head. Nose is orange peel, pine and toffee, almost sooty. Medium body with a tingle getting resiny. Taste is grapefruit peel, a little lemon juice, bittersweet chocolate and pine. Lingering bitter coffee bean and greens. Not my favorite style.

Bottle. Appearance: black fairly thick with foamy mocha head. Aroma: very chocolate and coffee strong with floral and citrus hop notes...really nice. Taste: mild beginning leading to some dark fruit and floral hops mid-palate and pretty bitter hoppy and coffee finish, hints of chocolate but not as strong as in aroma. Mouthfeel: creamy but fairly thin. Overall: very good black ipa. Nice mix between stout and east coast style ipa.

Draft at grapevine. Pours black with half an inch of khaki foam which leaves a bit of lacing in the glass. Nice hop notes on the nose. Big chocolate malt notes on the tongue which were a pleasant surprise. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish to clean things up. Very nice !

Bottle. Gift from GandGKevin. Black pour with a tall, dense brown head. Aroma is strong pine, roasted malt, hints of licorice and dark coffee. Taste is roasted malt, herbal notes, mint chocolate, coffee, dark chocolate notes, pine resins and citrus notes. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt, chocolate mint, pine, dark coffee and softer citrus.

Based on the brewers I knew it would have the "black" side well covered. Did not dissappoint in that department. What pleasantly surprised me was the level of hops and the hops profile. I thought this was definitely unique from what I’ve tried of the style. For those of you who were lucky enough to try Troegs’ scratch black IPA this spring they are very similar in the hops profile. Thought the citrusy aspect made it stand out and it does finish super dry, so I can understand how some were thrown off.

On tap at Mad Mex, an american version of Guinness. Black as coal and great head. Plenty of smoke and a good level of hops. Just a tad too acidic.

Black pour with mocha-colored foamy head. Aroma of pine, roasted malt, licorice. Chocolate flavor with some roasted malt, citrus, and a pine hop ending. Very nice beer!

Draft at the Belgian Cafe. Poured an opaque black with thick mocha head and lacing. Nose very mild for an IPA - light citrus, pine, roasted malt. Taste of moderate citrus hops, average bitterness, roasted malt and butter crumbles.

Totally dark with a large, thick, mocha colored head and good lacing. Passing whiff of coffee before the aroma of resinous, citrusy hops took over. Some roasted malt in the taste with a hint of bittersweet chocolate before the switch to dry, piney hops. Slightly sour aftertaste beneath the dark fruit and hops. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish.

On tap at lost dog cafe in McLean Virginia. Very dark with a long lasting tan head. Citrus with a strong roasted malt backbone. Mild but lasting hoppy aftertaste.
