3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall deep brown head - the body being about 90% opaque! Aroma of sticky, pungent and very resinous hops that show a lot at first, then the scent dies down to licorice, anise, alcohol and tons of roasted malts. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt with a good hop flavour, not overpowering, some pine and citrus notes and little else. Aftertaste shows a relatively simple roasted malt flavour, a hint of earthiness, but a lot of pine and grapefruit hop notes. Overall, surprisingly not as good as I’d expected, but with their high standards, that’s not a bad thing - this beer is good, just not great...good from a roasted malt perspective (no surprise) just not good from a hoppy perspective (once again, not what they’re known for). I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 07-November-2012 for US$8.99/6 pack sampled at home in Washington on 27-January-2013.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 8/20
Tall 3 finger tan head with lingering lacing. A nice malty, toasty backbone with a well balanced floral and piney hop presence. A dark almost black color

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
There’s a little bit of wow in this beer. First sip explodes with big roast, chocolate, and slightly harsh citrus hops. Right before the swallow, there’s a touch of ash, like in some coffee stouts. Slight tartness in the aftertaste. Not a perfect beer, but the first one in a while to really surprise me in a good way.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours perfectly black with a thick, buoyant mocha head that’s sticking around for a while and leaving some soapy lacing. Nose is very nice: notes of chocolate, slight coffee and roast, with plenty of hoppy freshness including mint, pine, and dry grapefruit. Taste is quite bitter, both roasty and hoppy, with a nice sweetness underneath. Medium bodied, a touch oily, softer carb, with a lengthy bitter finish. Damn nice brew, basically spot on for what I look for in the style.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from my home keg with a nearly opaque color brown color and a thick beige head that leaves a lot of lacing on the glass. The aroma is a dull but varied mix of chocolate and herbal hops. The flavor is a bit more lively, with an earthy combination of hops and roasted malts. The light, resinous mouthfeel supports this flavor profile nicely. Overall, this beer is roasty and multi-dimensional without being too overbearing like I find many in this style to be, making it a flavorful selection that goes down easier than its alcohol percentage would suggest.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle--pours a deep black color. I had a large, frothy tan head (was transported back from NC), so much so that my wife said it looked like a root beer float. Aroma was malty with the hops pushing the malt away. The taste was very similar with malt on the start and hops on the finish. Smooth palate without a hop smack. Ingles. Duck-rabbit does it again!

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Big sticky hop aroma, with some vegetal undertones. Pours an opaque black with a thin light tan head. The flavor is a big blast of piny hops, with a touch of roast which lingers quite some time in the finish. Very drinkable, and a really good representation of this new style.
