4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2013 On tap at Porter beer bar. Pours a black with a brown head that lasts throughout the beer with strong retention and laces nicely. Aroma has a nice combination of dark grains, pine hops and a bit of grassiness with just a hint of chocolate. Flavor begins with strong dark and roasted malts up front but is joined by a pine hoppiness and has even a hint of mint in the finish. Quite nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Jamesís place (thanks Dallas). Thick black pour with moderate tan head. Aroma is a balanced mix of pine and coffee. Notes of coffee grounds and pine needles. Slight ethanol in the finish but nothing offensive. Balanced level of earthy notes that work well together. Iím most impressed the lack of astringency despite how prominent the pine is.

12 ounce from Bruisin Ales. Big carbonated pour. Black body. Strong tobacco and chocolate taste. Dominant hops and pine. This one differs a bit from other black IPAs. The body of the beer is more complex than merely having a lot of hops.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours dark blackish with dark brown edges and a 2-finger fluffy khaki head. Nose is Alpha Klausy; huge roasty black patent malt, resiny bitter hops, cacao. Tastes assertively hoppy, very malty, nicely balanced, and complex, with the flavors popping off the tongue. THis one starts lively and stays lively, with the hops and malt blending together well. This is another great beer from Paul, and a top 10 black IPA.

Great floral aroma that follows into the initial taste. Black appearance, nice mouthfeel. Harsh on the palate, but worth it.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
I was quite disappointed in this beer. May have been a bad batch. It tasted like an old, unpreserved beer. Harshly abrasive. It seems to have had some fruity flavors and a nice hop presence, which should have resulted in a tasty brew, but alas, not this time.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours an opaque dark sable-brown with a fairly thick tan head that leaves some good lacing. Smoky, hoppy aroma has notes of roast malt and anchovies. Flavor has woody and smoky components plus a fishy hint and a bitter hoppy undertone. Smooth texture has about average body but good fizz and leaves a burnt-wood finish that has a hint of fish.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a deep brown black with a frothy 2" cinnamon head. Excellent retention and lace. Aroma is complex. Definite roasty aroma with some pine and a touch of citrus. Beer is lightly sweet and roasty with a pretty moderately hopped finish. There is a strange sour note on the finish as well that brings to mind Chinese black vinegar. Really odd. Medium thick body with fairly strong carbonation. The sourness on the finish throws this one off. Pretty much smells looks and feels good but flavors are off. Perhaps an off bottle? Iíll have to rerate this if I get the chance.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours an opaque dark brown with a humongous three finger dark brown head. Really amazing head retention and lacing.
Wonderful aroma of cocoa mixed with citrus hops. Some nice coffee notes in there as well. This really has a good nose on it.
The flavor has a tartness that starts right at the beginning and lingers throughout. Lots of roasted malt and a little bit of burn coffee. Some cocoa too. Citrus hop flavor is present along with a fairly high level of bitterness. My one complaint would be the carbonation is a little high which seems to thin out the mouthfeel.
Overall, a really solid ABA and one I would gladly pick up again. Duck Rabbit really makes some good beers.
