I will have to try this in a different bottle but it seems all over the place with a sour kick which seems fueled by the malt additions and the underlying bitter hops. Lactose city. This is a 96? I actually now know what the color black tastes like. This does not change my respect for the other offerings from duck-rabbit.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle, best by October 2012. Served at around 40-45F.
Pours black with a large three finger foamy light brown head that leaves a nice ring of drippy, sticky lacing and holds a small cap.
Aroma is interesting, mint, pine, grassy hops, some orange citrus, dark roasted malts, some anise, chocolate and coffee. Good to very good strength.
Flavor is very dark roasted malts, a hint burnt, chocolate, coffee, anise, moving to a blast of piney hops, citrus, some mint, some herbal hops, good bitterness, mild sweetness, mild alcohol.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, oily, strong carbonation.
Very good Black IPA. After hearing reports that some batches of this were infected, I was a bit leery going in, but thankfully this one is good. Very hoppy, but also extremely roasty. Good stuff.

Was surprised to see a hippy drink from these guys but they pull it off well. Aromas of pine and pepper. Flavor is nice and roasty malt. A pretty good example of this style so many miss on. Unish has a touch of bitterness and resiny pine.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a midnight brown color with some dark tan head. Aroma is sweet and pungent hop flavor with a bitterness you can feel just from the nose. Taste is an initial hop bite that gives rise to some dark and smoky chocolate malt notes that has a bit of their milk stout taste to it but with a little bitterness. This is the best black ipa I have had to date and highly recommend it.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle from Taco Mac. A nicely balanced aroma of cocoa, caramel, chocolate, roasted coffee, grapefruits, and citrus rinds. Pitch-black pour with one finger head. Medium-bodied and very smooth on the way down. Lots of caramel and cocoa upfront taste-wise. A big burnt graininess and resin flavor in the middle. A fair amount of bitter coffee, black chocolate, and some citrus towards the end as the hops take over.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Sweet chocolate, fresh pine, dark roasted coffee aroma. Black with a large brown head and thick creamy lacing. Ashy espresso, sweet chocolate, and minty pine flavor. Medium body, crisp astringent dry finish. Outstanding Black IPA! Smelled so good I couldn’t quit sniffing, and then later I burped pine tree (yeah, I know I’m not too lady like sometimes).

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle. Pours a black color with a large beige head. A sweet fruity nose with some roast and chocolates. A sweet fruity and pine flavor with mandarin oranges, spearmint (yes, I read the description) very smooth. A bit of chocolates, mint chocolates really with oranges. Sounds decadent. A bit thin. Very smooth and tasty.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Ar: Pine resin, orange, pineapple, and some cinnamon.
Ap: Deep brown, clear - very large mocha head with good retention and chunky lacing.
T: Light coffee with some cocoa - medium bitterness, piney and minty - lemon flavor mixed with roasted malts and currants on the finish.
P: Medium body with high carbonation - finish is dry.
O: Tasty and very complex beer - hop profile has typical American hop flavors, but with some interesting tropical and spicy accents.
