The Duck-Rabbit Hoppy Bunny American Black Ale is both intensely hoppy and intensely BLACK! Eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

Pours black with a creamy medium tan head...heavy lacing. Aroma has roasty dark fruits...anise and licorice root. Flavor follows suit...adds a bit of a burnt/bitter/ashy layer. Mouthfeel is light/medium and the finish is dry and ashy/anise/dark chocolate bitter.

Norfolk bottle. Absolutely gorgeous pour that looked like it was in nitro. Big pillowy tan head and tons of lacing. Green hops and dark malt in the aroma. Great balance in the flavor: nice bitterness but also strong malt. Very well done.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured black color with a huge foamy dark brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was licorice, roasty malts, tart fruity hops, perfume and a odd slightly off presence. The flavor was bitter, roasty and toasty with notes of anise, rough fruity hops, perfume and again an odd off presence. Long bitter, roasty, anise and fruity hop finish. Medium body. Ok.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2014 12oz bottle, thanks to jmborggren for hooking me up with my favorite style. Black color. Good one-finger brown head, with good retention. Leaves awesome, nearly full sheets of lace. Bigger body. Nice, nearly chewy texture. Light, crisp carbonation. Lightly dry in the finish. Great earthy hop, pine, light roast malts. Hint of dark chocolate. Good moderate bitter taste, light sweet. Some light earthiness. Satisfying black IPA. 8/4/7/4/14

Re-rate from a taster on tap during RBWG 2014: Kind of clear brown, slight red color. Little khaki head. Some lace. Awesome earthy, piney roasty black IPA hop aroma. Exactly the nose I like from a black IPA. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Hint of chocolate. Moderate bitter taste, minimal sweet. Hints of chocolate. Very satisfying, hoppy black IPA. Good roast malt, some dark chocolate, nice light coffee. Good stuff!

Bottle, Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours black with two-inches of brown head. Smells of dark fruits. Tastes on tangy pine, soap, and chocolate.

Aroma of hops and almost a coffee smell. Pours almost black with dark brown head and moderate lacing. It resembles a combination of a really good porter and an IPA.. It’s palate is a bit coating- more of a sipper than a session beer. A really good beer overall.

Bottle to snifter (shared by jmborggren). Looks good; cola with thin white beige lacing. Smells and tastes solid; dark malt, bitter hops, and roast. Decent on the palate. Enjoyable.

Appearance: silky near-black pour, with half a finger of medium tan head and decent lacing. Aroma: surprisingly strong note of chocolate, balanced by pine, resin, and citrus. Taste: bitter dark chocolate, with strong hop notes (pine, grapefruit, and mint). Finish: dry and bitter, with lingering coffee roast and resin. Notes: Silky and drinkable palate, roasty, with full hoppy bitterness. Feels like an extremely hoppy porter, but I feel that way about the style in general. Decent.
