4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAY 11, 2014 bought a bottle at zillies market on Ocracoke. Pours deep black- beautifully opaque with a thin tan head. definitely something to this one- pours more similar to the stouts I have been drinking lately than your typical black ale. Lots of hops- piney with sweet toasty warmth from the hops. the NZ hop- Motueka- is a nice touch. something different that makes the conoisseur go mmmm. chocolate, earthy, sweet, hoppy. my favourite offering from duck- rabbit.
05/10/14 Had as part of flight at Juicy Lucy’s. Best one of the four. Still really good- smooth. Average mouthfeel- not super heavy. All flavors play nicely together. Smooth, but not sweet. Hoppy, but not bitter. Excellent.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured as a taster. Lots of interesting hop nose - some citrus and pine and some tropical fruit noes underneath. The taste is nice, hoppy but not a giant hop bomb. Hop notes are more balanced towards citrus and tropical fruit with pine subdued.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – Pours a super deep brown color that looks black in the glass with only light able to shine through at the bottom of the glass or when held in front of the light, allowing a little bit of a ruby color to be seen. Upon pouring there is a one finger cream head that has a moderate level of retention, but which fades to leave a good level of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell- Overall the aroma is rather light consisting mainly of roasted malt and pine. With these aromas comes other aromas of a grapefruit hop and a sweeter chocolate smell.
Taste – The taste starts out with a smooth roasted malt taste mixed with some nice pine hoppiness upfront. The hop is not strong, but complements the roasted flavors nicely. Some dark chocolate begins developing more toward the middle, along with some more pine hop and an entrance of grapefruit hop. The pine remains rather light and is soon overshadowed by the grapefruit hop more toward the end. The chocolate also increases in intensity till the end with it sweetening up some toward a more semi-sweet chocolate. In the end a very pleasant dark and roasted but lightly sweetened hop flavor is left on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. Overall it was a nice feel as the fuller body was great for the roasted and chocolate flavors while the carbonation added a bit of tingle to complement the hop nicely.
Overall - A rather tasty ABA. It was actually a nice pairing upfront in the taste of the drier roasted flavors with the pine followed by another nice complementation of the grapefruit hop and chocolate toward the end of the taste. This was a rather tasty drink and is one to try.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Une black ipa qui tire plus vers le robuste porter. Une fine résine dans le corps, pas trop d’aromatique houblonné pour camoufflé le chocolat noir, des notes lactées, très moelleux en bouche.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Nose of dark roast malt and charry black malt with pine and a touch of cedar, pairing with additional woody hop tones and danker, stickier unders. Sweet with some fruit, predominately well-pairing citrus. Pours dark brown with a very airy tan head that needs to be watched carefully. Taste is burnt, charred, and moderately dry, has a bit of sourish acrid tang and lovely ashen and smoky notes toward the finish. Body is a little flabby but medium-full and pretty drinkable, fruitiness is tones down significantly and we’re left with more wood and fire treatment. Not too bold, actually pretty well balanced and repeatable.
