Commercial Description:
A traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). The subtle sweetness imparted by the lactose balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains which give this delicious beer its black color.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Tony at Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a hzay dark brown with a frothy one finger white-tan head that settles slowly and provides ample lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate, vanilla, molasses, caramel, banana and slight phenol notes. Flavor is sweet and malty as well with notes of sweet milk, roasted coffee, toffee, caramel, chocolate and bananas. Generally medium to full body with a pleasing roasted and malty finish. Interesting sweet stout.

12 oz bottle

I have been meaning to try the entire line of Duck Rabbit beers so when the opportunity presented itself to pick up a few more I got singles of many I have not yet tried. This was the first one I sampled and if it is any indication I can’t wait to get to the rest later this week.

Aroma / Appearance - A one finger dense packed head settled above the reddish black body. Coffee with a blend of creamer and Hershey’s chocolate set the tone. There was also a hint of rye toast making this an ideal pairing for breakfast.

Flavor / Palate - The fluid creamy mouthfeel immediately yields the sensation of iced coffee, skim milk and vanilla creamer. Next comes a lingering dryness like that found in powdered milk. The sweet yet smooth finish highlights an enjoyable experience. If this were on tap at a local bar it might slip into my "go to" rotation.4

Bottle, courtesy tronraner. Pours a very dark brown with light caramel highlights. Thin ring of white head, and sheets of lacing on the glass. Roasted cocoa and chalky, gritty malts in the nose. There’s a subtle coffee touch, too, that’s quite pleasant. Flavor has a nice acidic touch, with coffee roastiness, and some lactate to finish it off. Overall, a bit subdued. Thin-bodied, balanced, smooth mouthfeel. Could warm you up.

Draft at Flying Saucer Raleigh. Deep dark ruby red color. Good head retention. Sweet creamy aroma. Taste is smooth. Sweet/sour with caramel and spice. Could be more complex, but still very good. 6/4/7/3/17/3.7

Rerate: 6/6/08...review from cvillebeergeek.blogspot.com.

Appearance: Very, very, very dark with a three finger brown head. Head retention and lacing are both above average. 3.5/5.0

Aroma: Sweet aroma of milk sugar, roasted malt and coffee with just a subtle hint of spiciness. Fairly complex and interesting. 4.0/5.0

Taste: I like! Primarily roasted malts and lactose, but those are in such a perfect balance that they form a perfect singularity that cannot be indentified by its components. I probably like this a little more than most would, but, well... 4.9/5.0

Mouthfeel: Great taste, creamy, smooth and well-balanced. 4.5/5.0

Drinkability: Just like the porter, this weighs in at 5.7%. Rich, but smooth. Sweet, but not cloying. Very drinkable beer. 4.0/5.0

Overall: I rated this beer previously on April 26th at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh, NC. Part of a sampler. I said: "Deep, dark ruby red color. Good head retention. Sweet, creamy aroma. Taste is smooth. Sweet/sour with caramel and spice. Could be more complex, but still good." I tasted a different beer tonight, in a rare instance of the bottle coming across better than draft. Highly complex, highly approachable. This is a hit. 4.4/5.0

That review uses a different rating scale. For Ratebeer: 6/4/9/4/18/4.1.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smell of roast and sweet. Taste is smooth and sweet. The lactose adds a subtle sweetness. A pretty good beer.

Re-Rate: Beautiful dark brown pour with thin extra light tan head. Not much aroma over the smoking asshole beside me. Flavor notes of chocolate, toffee, and a coffee tartness in the finish. Some lactose is percievable. Creamy medium mouthfeel despite a slightly watery body. Impressive on draught. Much better than my original tasting. I just couldn’t get behind this beer. The lactic flavor was just too overpowering. Smelled sickly sweet. I’ve heard good things about this brewery, so i’ll give it another try down the road, but my sampling wasn’t so great. this is good. I bought a single bottle from Sam’s, not knowing what to expect. Opened it, poured, and took a nice sip. tastes like a milkshake.
