Commercial Description:
A traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). The subtle sweetness imparted by the lactose balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains which give this delicious beer its black color.

I’ve been anticipating this beer since I read about it on ratebeer. The pour is black until held up to the light. It is really a very dark red. The head is large, filling the imperial pint glass. Large and small bubbles mix to form a light cream pile that slowly diminishes to leave only chunks of lasting head and lace. The aroma is sweet with a trailing roast. The flavor is sweet malt and mild roast. the body is tight carbonation up front but the finish is smooth. A well done milky smooth stout.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a dark black core; significant, textured, light-brown head with great retention and lacing. Lactic and cocoa powder aroma; some roasted malts and bitter chocolate; reminds me of a foreign stout aroma. Lively carbonation upfront; some milky / oatmeal character, plenty of dark chocolate and charred malts; the lactic quality is really significant here. Medium, milky and milk chocolate finish.

Bottle from Total Wine in Huntersville, NC. Pours a dark brown/black with a small tan head. Aroma is a bit of lactose and cocoa. Taste is strange, hard to characterize. Perhaps extra roasted with a touch of burnt something. Good, but not great.

(Rating #1019)

Bottle. Heavy black color with brown and ruby undertones and a full and lasting light tan head. Good lacing. Chocolate and coffee mix nicely in the aroma but it is all suppressed by too much of an alcohol smell. An easy feel to this beer that goes along with some sweet chocolate and plum flavor. Finish is moderatly bitter with a nut flavor on the back of the tongue. Decent but seemed like a strange mixture.

OK for a milk stout. Sweeter than most. Not as heavy as I expected. Good overall.

Decent chocolaty malt on the nose at an arm’s length. Pours red molasses in color. Almost black. Vigorous tan frothy head holds together. Full chocolaty flavor with out an aftertaste. Very smooth. Very easy on the palate. Not as suripy as it’s pour suggest. This stout doesn’t assault your buds with a excess of bitter endings, but is a nice-an-easy drinking stout. Not a feather weight nor a heavy weighed brew, but nicely in the middle.
