3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 11, 2014 Rating no. 900! Bottle. Sweetish cream-and-lactose aroma with chocolate and grain. Pours deep red, dark approaching opaque, with an overly-excited, rocky, creamy light brown head. Crisp and prickly, tangy sour acidity, near metallic at points, with light bitterness. Loads of berry and fruit blend distinctively. Some Kashi-dehydrated strawberries and syrupy molasses. Light apple cider. Aftertaste is bone dry and mildly bitter with a dose of roast and spice, and I canít shake the feeling that a few ounces of scotch migrated over to this bottle from the Wee Heavy. Not much in the way of the chocolate or lactose indicated in the nose. A yeastiness which is semi-Belgian. Full body. Extremely robust flavor. Well-made and individualistic; after liking all five of their offerings, Iím impressed with D-R, one of the better young breweries in the country. Ah, but back to the Milk Stout: one of the early favorites for prettiest beer of the year, and though sheís not like any stout Iíve had before, sheís a good one! [2007.01.14: 3.9]
Long-overdue re-rate 7.5 years later, though Iíve had a few more bottles in the interim. Nose is much, much roastier than I remember, taste is much the same. Thereís still that strange sense of strawberry-mocha artificiality that cuts right through everything else. The sweetness, strangely, is fruitier rather than lactose/sugary, and the whole thing is a bit airier than I prefer. But still, a good one, if not a great one. [2014.08.11: 3.7]

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2007 Another of the D-R beers that I received from decaturstevo. Thanks! --
Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout pours out a very dark brown color, but pretty much looks black in the glass. It seems a bit thin-bodied on the pour, but maybe itís actually not (Iíll find out soon enough!). The HUGE (picture a glass half filled of liquid and the other half filled of foam! tan head collapses slowly and ultimately leaves a thin crown thatís a bit thicker around the edges. A sweet, creamy, chocolate aroma is interlaced with some roasted malt in the background. The flavor is roasted malt and cocoa, but there is a heightened level of sweetness that would normally not be there if it werenít for the lactose (hence "milk stout"). The finish is also sweet with a smooth cocoa bitterness at the very end. This beer goes very well with the milk and dark chocolates that Iím nibbling on! As previously suspected, this beer and a medium body and has a bit more carbonation that I would have liked. In addition to a more full body, I was also hoping for a creamier texture. Oh well, this beer is still pretty good and reminds me a lot of the chocolate stout I made awhile back...

Toasty, biscuity malts and plenty of chocolate in the roasty nose. Clear, darkest mahogany brown body is topped by a decent tan head that recedes to cover with some lace. Overly roasty and dry initially but chocolate sweetness emerges especially as it warms. Medium body is quite dry with moderate carbonation. Bottle sampled with BeerPrince, CapFlu, frink and Oakes.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2007 Pours near black with ruby hues. Aroma of coffee, dark roasted malt, and sweet milkiness. Taste is roasty, smoky, coffee, licorice, small amount of lactose. Mouthfeel is full bodied with lively carbonation. Pretty roasty for a milk stout, but still good.

Bottled. Poured a clear mahogany with a medium creamy cap of beige head. Nose picked up sweet roasty chocolate, milkiness, and other dark sweet sugars.. smelled quite nice. The flavor flowed well from the aroma... on the sweeter end with lightly-roasted chocolate and latte milkiness.. left an almost coffee bitterness and mild lactose sourness at the finish. Lighter-bodied with a nice flow to it. Good stuff!
