allfreej (358), Louisville, Kentucky, USA May 21, 2009 On tap at The Big Hunt, Washington, DC. Black pour with a thin white head. Coffee nose and flavor, thin mouthfeel. Not as sweet as some other Milk Stouts, such as Mackeson’s. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia May 17, 2009 [Bottle] Pours dark cola brown with a few tiny bubbles trying to pass themselves off as a head. Aroma is fairly sweet, with vanilla, coffee, a touch of milk chocolate and caramel. Taste has quite a bit of roasted malt, especially towards the back end, chocolate, and very subdued bitterness. A little thin, smooth, and has an enjoyable, long, semi-dry finish. Overall, not a bad sweet stout, but not overly memorable either. U.S. rating #500. GuanoBoy (7), West Virginia, USA does not count May 15, 2009 Aroma was vanilla-ey, caramel sweet bread, with sweet instant coffee. Clear brown color, not what I think of in a stout. Flavor was sweet, not overpowering good instant coffee and caramel maltiness with moderate esters and hops. Palate was sweet and thin with a mild but apparent bitterness. Not what I would look for in a milk stout, not rich enough; more of a brown ale. RHeastings (381), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 11, 2009 Updated: May 22, 2009Enjoyed in a mug via a 12 oz bottle. Pours a jet black with a medium tan colored head. The nose is of dark roasted malts, however the aromas are restrained; perhaps due to the addition of the lactose. Initially, one gets roasty flavors across the palate. These are balanced by an interesting sweetness on the back end of the drink, just prior to swallowing. The finish is sweet, making this a drink best enjoyed over somewhat of a long period. Overall, this was the first "Milk Stout" I have tried. It was not my favorite beer ever, but I can appreciate the complexity added from the lactose, and did enjoy the balance of roasted and sweet flavors. Birdiebeagle (779), Perkasie, Pennsylvania, USA May 8, 2009 Bottle Pours A deep purple brown black with small tan head. Has a good aroma of roated malts, vanila, chocolate, and milk. Has a light carbonation. A good mouthfeel. The flavors are good. Nice roastedness, and nutty. Has a watery-thick texture. A solid finish with a good aftertaste. I would love to have this one on draft. A darn good milk stout. egajdzis (3604), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA May 8, 2009 [Draft @ Capones] Poured an opaque black color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, lactose, flaked oats, cocoa, and vanilla. Taste of roasted malt, light smoke, chocolate, and some vanilla, with a dry, roasty finish. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA May 2, 2009 Draft. A nice, rich deep brown pour with a little head and minor lacing. Dark chocolate and vanilla aromas. A little hazelnut coffee on the nose which is more pronounced on the taste. The nicest thing about this milk stout is the deft use of lactose to give a bright, milky acidity to the beer. Very classic, nutty flavors. michael-pollack (2606), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA May 2, 2009 12oz. Bottle: Aroma of coffee, bitter coffee, lactose, sugar, roasted malts and slight chocolate. Poured brown/very deep amber in color with no head at all. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of chocolate, malts, sugar, lactose, light coffee, and some toffee. Medium body. Thin, slightly chalky texture. Soft carbonation. Sweet, lactose, chocolate, malt, and slight coffee finish is slightly chalky.
