Commercial Description:
A traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). The subtle sweetness imparted by the lactose balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains which give this delicious beer its black color.

12 ounce bottle given to me by my coworker Freida from her last trip down home -- thanks Freida! -- and served at cellar temperature from a Corsendonk glass. Beautiful creamy fine-bubbled dark tan head tops the jet, nearly opaque body, decaying slowly and evenly and leaving chunky lacing....aroma of milk chocolate and light roast, not overly sweet nor overly exciting, a bit of licorice perhaps....body is evenly balanced between sweet light chocolate and moderate to dark roasty grains, from the beginning to the finish, a bit of milky-creamy character, a touch of dark berries, very smooth, very quaffable, but a touch boring perhaps....ends just as sweet as it begins. A nice beer, but a little underwhelming for me -- high expectations and all.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of coffee, bitter coffee, lactose, sugar, roasted malts and slight chocolate. Poured brown/very deep amber in color with no head at all. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of chocolate, malts, sugar, lactose, light coffee, and some toffee. Medium body. Thin, slightly chalky texture. Soft carbonation. Sweet, lactose, chocolate, malt, and slight coffee finish is slightly chalky.

The porter is really a better beer than this, but this really isn’t all that bad. It’s a bit thin in flavor and mouthfeel, but has a nice roastiness and the sweetness isn’t overbearing. Good dessert stout.

GABF 2009: The beer here is brown. The head is thin and tan. The nose is sweet and severely roasty. Flavors are sweet, lactic and roasted to all hell. There’s also notes of chocolate and coffee. Good for the style, unfortunately, this is far from my style.

Draught. Black color, with ruby edges. Medium beige head. Roasty, chocolate and mocha aromas. Flavor is light, with burnt flavors initially, and then cream and chocolate bittersweet in the end. A little thin in flavor. I didn’t think it was too sweet.

Red/black color with a medium lasting head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with some chocolate sneaking through. Flavor is also sweet with roasted grains and chocolate, but with a strange tartness in the finish. Not unplesant, just didn’t seem to fit in with the other flavors. Overall not a bad beer, somewhat light in body but plesant to drink.

Bottle courtesy of Suttee: Dark brown, near black, that does appear somewhat clear next to the light. There’s a small tan head that dies very quickly. The aroma is roasted malts and coffee - pretty simple, but well done. The taste is bitter chocolate, roasted malts, and that is balanced nicely by a creamy sweetness. It’s a bit sweet than most, but that really works here. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, mouthfeel is thin an water at times.

Deep brown pour with a nice sized and creamy tan head. Aroma is very much coffee with minimal chocolate and a lot of roasted malt. Pretty intense flavor, very robust and roasted coffee, citrus hops pretty evident towards the finish. Finish is some vanilla and burnt bitterness. Something isn’t right about this, I think the body is a bit too rough. Heavily carbonated and a bit too hoppy for this style. Still good though.
