Medium body with a tingle. Taste is caramel, chocolate, mild bourbon and raisin. Finishes with vanilla then grapefruit pith. All the flavors merge perfectly with malts out front and hops to accent. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 5, 2009 Draft at Capone’s. Pours mahogany/deep ruby with 1-finger off-tan head and great lacing. Nose is dark malt, vanilla, dark choc, hops, oaky, earthy. Tastes rich, oaky and bourbony, earthy, peaty, with heavy dark malt, dark choc, slight black cherry, backup hops. The flavor in this is very complex and layered, but subtle, and the palate is hefty and very well balanced for a beer this big. I had nop idea the ABV was this high on this one, and will gladly take the high outlier position on this. As unique a beer as i have ever had, starting from a 4 ounce sample at Capone’s, then moving to a pint, then saying to my wife, "I have to growler this!" Another marvelous beer from Paul and Duck Rabbit. Paul, it was a pleasure to meet you tomight, and keep up the good work, man! TomDecapolis (3167), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, oak, touch of bourbon, citrusy and piney hops and vanilla. Flavor of toasted malt, caramel, buttery toffee, pine and grapefruit hops,, light roasted malt, vanilla, oak and a touch of bourbon. Barrel aging did wonders. Bourbon and woody but not overdone. hopdog (5561), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 2, 2009 On Tap at Flying Saucer in Raleigh. Pours a nice deep dark brown almost black with a nice creamy lasting beige head, and some lace. Aroma is initially some really nice potent (but not overpowering or offensive) bourbon- pappy, creamy smooth vanilla, oak, earth, dark malts, as well as nice dark sugary dried fruits, raisin, and fig, and lots of big toasted and caramel malts- some roast, and nutty brunt chocolate with the vanilla- hops seemed pretty well subdued in the aroma. Flavor is a bit green with the hops but they are subtle- the big component is the big dark malts, fruits, and of course th pappy barrels with their own sweetness, and oaky vanilla char character- burnt malts, and lots of chocolate- with a good big toffee, and molasses sweetness. Overall the beer inst all that big- and the body is quite refined and not thick, but it has a slight warming and finishes pretty damn smooth. Lots of things going on with this beer, but it all seemed to work out. Nice. zizzybalubba (368), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 1, 2009 On tap at Tyler’s Taproom in Durham. Dark cola-like pour. Dark fruit aroma; very hard to pinpoint this one exactly. Taste of grape, nuts, vanilla, and roasted malt. One of the most interesting beers I’ve ever had but not entirely unlike New Holland’s Dragons Milk. Definitely try this one if you get the chance. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2009 Draft at Tyler’s Durham. Interesting stuff. Pours an almost completely black color with a tan head. Obvious bourbon and some coffee in the nose on top of a strong pine aroma. I’m taken by the immediate blast of citrus and I feel that it meshes well with the bourbon and vanilla notes. There’s some chocolate in there as well. Definitely need to try this one again. kp (8399), Woodstock, Georgia, USA
