Strong sweet roasted malt fills the nose. It looks good too, completely dark black with a thick medium sized head. The flavor was also fairly unique, however not my favorite. Tons of roasted malt that is bitter sweet and slightly salty. I never really picked up on notes of a soy sauce type of flavor in a beer before, until this one. Has an odd, but intriguing, hint of sourness in the finish. The finish lingers for quite some time but the palate leans a little too much to the watery side. An interesting imperial stout. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 19, 2008 Fantastic RIS! The smell is a true wonder. Black soysauce and sausage-grease, combined with sugary rum and malts. Loads of roastyness, but it is combined with a very sweet saltiness, as if heavily salted butter was used to make a batch of chocolate. Very good and underrated--I think this rating should be swapped with the disastrously overrated DR Baltic Porter, because this beer tastes world class to me. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Bottle from Santa. Thanks! Pours a nice onyx, with a head of olive green. Aroma is sweet chocolate bar with a tinge of plastic. Flavor is chocolate with a bacon- yes, bacon- aftertaste. Average mouthfeel. Above average Russian Imperial Stout, but not much else. buzzoven (333), Japan
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 15, 2008 Bottle bought from Whole Foods, Raleigh, NC. Poured a dark thick black colour that no light could penetrate. Heavy smell of dark chocolate and rum. Mouthfeel was not as thick as I like in my ImpStouts; but this had a smooth milky appeal. Finish is strong and the alcohol was presented in a well balanced way along with a pleasant roasted bitterness. A nice surprise; very good and quite enjoyable. | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 4, 2008 Thanks to durhambeer for this awesome beer! Pours oily black with a thick creamy dark tan head. Big roasty grain, chocolate malt, and dark fruit aroma. Roasted grains more chocolate malt and nice dark fruit taste with hints of fig and raisin. Nice creamy body, great lacing and a great aftertaste, not too cloying. I have to give this a resounding WOW! Petrucci914 (582), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 26, 2008 Pour black with a medium mocha head. Smells very abrasive - alcohol, chocolate, toasted malts. Taste is very imperial stout - roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol. What an imperial stout should be - nothing glorified. daknole (2926), Plantation, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 25, 2008 This is a unique imp stout. Pours a predictable black with a smallish brown head. Roasty and toasty on the nose with some good coffee, roasted malt and chocolate. A delicious bitter finish makes this a really nice beer to drink. YUMMY!
