Like staring at a black hole with your eyes closed. My wife thought I was drinking tar. This beer was wonderfully rich, sweet, licorice-y, molasses-y. Just how I like an imperial stout, hops were very subtle, way in the background, and the MALT just overpowers you! I would drink this again and again (although you probably shouldn’t have more than 1 :-) I was totally shocked to find this was 10% abv - I did not have any "alcohol-y" sensation whatsoever, which is a big plus.

From bottle. Rich chocolate malt, oak and vanilla with vapory alcoholic notes. Twizzlers and Tootsie Roll, molasses and cafe creme. Velvet black and inky, topped with a cocoa-tan lacing head. Heavy body, not chewy, but fairly smooth with light carbonation. Mild warming. Starts rich and malty, with molasses and chocolate, coffee and Twizzlers. Stays sweet throughout with alcohol warming, a bit overpowering in the finish, with cloying roasted-burnt malt, sweet chocolate and an oaky-winey note. A hefty beer, but drinkable. The 10% is fairly well hidden.

This comes out of the tap a rich, opaque sable with a dark tan head. Aroma is strong, like smoky or roast coffee with a hint of sweet chocolate. The rich, smoky, coffee-ish flavor has an undertone of chocolate and a whisper of sweetness. This delightfully smooth stout fairly dances on the tongue and is a joy to drink.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with GAManiac. Pours a dense oily black with an incredibly thin brown head that disappeared at the first sip and left no lace at all. Light aroma, especially for an impy stout. Some light, fairly indistinct whiffs of roasted malt and a bit of chocolate and that was about it. Kind of odd flavor with soy sauce being the most dominant flavor along with some chocolate, light roast, and suede. Dense and full-bodied, which I appreciated, bit the flavor just didn’t cut it for me. Overall, this one was a disappointment.

Tasted 5/1/08. 2006 Vintage acquired via DLD trade with czock(BA). Wax dipped by the aforementioned trader. Dark and pitch. Spiraling tan head. Fig nose. Lot going on in the nose. Raisins and port. Anise, cocoa and toffee. Full bodied and big. Sweet and sticky malts. Toffee and toast. Caramel and oily. Slick but bitter. Dark berries and tart cherries. Touch acidic. Aging very nicely!

Thanks to kp for including this bonus off my wantlist! Pours pure black with a moderate dark brown head. Strong caramel toffee aroma with notes of chocolate and coffee. Very roasty bitter taste of coffee, chocolate, sour cherry. Big, big taste.
