330ml bottle from Ales by Mail

Bottled 18.12.12 - Pours pitch black with a sticky white head. Aroma of roasted malts, salty licorice, leather, some grassy hoppiness and fruits. Taste is roasty, slightly salty and bitter with some grassy hoppiness and hints of fruits and licorice. Finish is roasty with hints of licorice and chocolate, and some nice bitterness. Quite nice, dark and roasty porter with some bitter hoppiness.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This beer is thick, inky black with a rapidly disappearing tan head. It has very strong orange marmalade and tropical fruit flavours with chocolate and slight roasted coffee on the creamy finish. Superb!

33cl bottle. Pours very dark brown with thin tan head: thick lacing. Aroma is passionfruit and mango mixed with chocolate, licorice, roasted malt and some tar. Taste gives a little tropical fruit juice, some citrus, and plenty of rich dark chocolate, treacle and roasted malt. Citric bitterness to finish - lingers awhile alongside some roasted malt and tobacco. Medium mouthfeel. Tasty stuff as per usual from The Kernel.

Bottle from trade with madmitch76. Pours dark brownish with a small stable beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, strong piney hops. Taste is moderate sweet thick chocolate, liquorice, piney and citrus hops, lively carbonated, medium bodied. Herbal hoppy bite towards the end. Light sticky mouthfeel.

500ml bottle. Witch’s cat with a fat, mousse-like manila collar. Striking, incongruous aroma full of red apple, melon, flowers, passion fruit over a more conventionally porteresque chocolate, burnt puffed wheat and cinder toffee background. Slick powdery, cocoa-like condition ushering in a bittersweet, succulent blend of black chocolate, tropical fruit, soapy hop and burnt Sugar Puff. Makes more sense in your mouth than on paper.

Bottle at home in London. Pours thick brown with a dense, creamy beige head that looks like it needs a shovel with which to be eaten. Lots of dirty pine on the nose, some fairly strong roasted malts and dry cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor, lots of gritty pine, earth, some burnt cocoa and wood, touches of tangy citrus, hints of milk chocolate. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Burnt earth, grass, dirt and pine to finish, moderate roast, chalky cocoa, light dryness, toasted sugars. A nice and hoppy porter.

Bottle. Pungent hop aroma with some chocolate and roast. Burnt toast and bitter hop flavour leading to a chocolate malt finish. Straddles the line between porter and Black IPA.

Very dry and very hoppy. To my untrained gob it tastes more like a black IPA. Delicious. In other news, I’ve fantasised about machine gunning a room full of people, discussed chopping people’s hands off to get a free lunch and sticking people’s eyeballs on a pencil to get through security. I’m a pleasant sort normally. I’m sure I’ve seen Pacific Jade in a film. Not sure Bramling Cross was in it though...

33cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring - hops listed on back of bottle. A pitch black pour with a ring of cream head; intense chocolate malt aroma with a whiff of vanilla; the taste has lots of acrid smoke and burnt wood, but this then softens somewhat towards bitter dark chocolate; and then a dry peaty finish, and a long lingering bitter finish. While I very much like the style, I think the hopping is too assertive on this occasion.

Hops are denoted on the rear label. Opaque black beer with decent pale tan head. Palate is a little soft and quite dry. Even dark malt with touches of lactose and roast. Dry floral hops with just a little citrus. Nice combination of dark malt and floral hops but it’s a bit too dry. Finishes with a trace of mint.
