Scopey (3239) - Croydon, Greater London, - AUG 2, 2012
Bottle from Kernel brewery. It pours near black, with a thin beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, roasted malt, earth, chocolate and some dark fruit. The taste is bitter-sweet chocolate, roasted malt, earth, tangy dark fruit (particularly blackcurrant and blueberry) and filter coffee, with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Well balanced and flavoursome. Great stuff.

Feb 2013 – room temp bottle. Says ’Bramling Cross’ on the back, bottled Oct 2012, 5.7%. Initial smell reminded me of the others I’ve had and I worried that it would be similar to the those. Initial impression is smokey, sweet roasted barley, syrupy. Good body. This is a good porter.

Bottle at home, from the brewery, 03/02/13. 5.7% on the label - bottled 31/01/12. Pours black with a good frothy tan head that retains well. Nose is big on roast malt, cocoa powder, chocolate cookies, background hops. Taste comprises roast malt, chocolate, light cardboard, some hop presence, light metallic notes. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth on the palate. A decent flavoursome porter from the good folks at Kernel.

Bottle from beermerchants.com. A black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Nice roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, dark fruit, some chocolate and a hint of coffee. Complex porter from the excellent Kernel.

Bottle @ home. The pour’s deep brown with a large, thick tan head. The nose is nose-tingling roasted chocolate, bitter grass, sweet cocoa. The taste is more rich, sweet chocolate, roasted malts. Hints of red berry. Ashy body. Smooth and thick mouthfeel. Lovely stuff.

0.5l bottle from beermerchants.com This is a deep dark murky brown - near black beer with a massive and quite impressive multi-layered lasting ashy chocolate head and some old school big beige sediments at the bottom of the glass. It has a really nice fresh hoppy aroma with lots of chocolate-malts tones all the way. Also some fresh cold coffee in here mixed with sweet biscuits. A really nice aroma! Oh, yeah! Strong and really coffee-like flavors here! Lots and lots of cold coffee. Not like in espresso, but plain normal filtered coffee. It’s average to average+ carbonated and it has a nice oily texture in the mouth. Really hoppy and refreshing as well, and I find strong tones of heavy chocolate paper. A true delightness to drink in the morning on a lovely day. What more can a bloke ask for? 26.05.2012

Bottle from Beermerchants.com. Pours pitch black with a big creamy tanned head, slow gusher. Aroma of dark chocolate and some mlid smoked wood. Taste is smooth and creamy, high carbonation lifts the hops towards the front, where it is supported by a moderate sweet dark malty body, chocolate, liquorice and coffe at the final.

Bottle at home in London. Pours dark brown with a beige foam head. Strong dark roast nose with peat, tar and burnt grass. Medium sweet flavor, very roasty with light mineral qualities, light grass, burnt wood, burnt cocoa. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Semi-dry finish, roasty with more minerals, grass, burnt toast, wood, faintly tangy dark malts and baking cocoa. A robust porter, and a very good one at that.

Opaque black beer, massive tan head. The head tastes of mild wet wood, dark chocolate and a trace of smoke. Palate is smooth but with prickly fine carbonation. Earth dark malt with a trace of smoke and dark chocolate. Malt cream. Mild tang front ends subtle dark fruits. Finishes smooth and earthy with a little dark coffee. Really nice dark earthy porter - every mouthful interesting!
