Bottle. Dark brown with a large beige foam. Aromas are coffee and chocolate with liquorice. Spicy with cookie dough and peat smokiness. Background caramel with herbal notes. Flavours are gritty cocoa with roast malts and liquorice. Winter berries with caramel with herbal and floral notes. Peppery with bitter grapefruit and a woody dry finish. Very good.

My Bottom Line :
Dark chocolate and toasted bread converge on this Porter’s cherry-like hints before green hop bitterness and molasses undertones complete a compelling picture.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam tops the blackness with dark brown edges.
-Carbonation is quite fluffy, building a pillowy mouthfeel.
-Roastiness hits you at first, but the malt’s complexity is slowly, but surely, unveiled.
-That is one attractive nose.

A Mes rate. Bottle at The Kernel.
Thanks have to go out to Evin for making sure I tried this. My god it’s good. The aroma is a barrage of chocolate and grassy hops. It shouldn’t work but by jingo old chap, I think it’s a beauty. Phenominally good in fact. There is a glorious herbal note that just sits so well. Almost fennel, almost rosemary, so noseable. Not quite so good in the mouth but it’s still very tasty. Slight hop resin, really good roast coffee notes. Lengthy fresh malt and chocolate finish. Just bloody excellent all round.

Half on keg at CP&K, Meet the Brewer event, pre-festival night. Shiny black surface to a deep, dark coloured body. Dark malty fruits to the nose. Bittersweet chocolate in flavour including cocoa, bit of pine and modest hints of yeast. Rounded bittersweet finish. Pleasing (London, 01.08.2011).

Bottle, picked up from the brewery June 2011 consumed outside Frank (camper) at Leiketo campsite, Basque country , Northern Spain, 24.06.11 Pours black with a light beige head. Some light coffee on the nose with hops also showing. Fresh crisp hoppiness in the mouth and a constant roastiness is also there. Really hoppy tasty stuff, but maybe lack a really porter style edge in favour of the hop driven flavours. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6

500ml bottle. Witch’s cat with a fat, mousse-like manila collar. Striking, incongruous aroma full of red apple, melon, flowers, passion fruit over a more conventionally porteresque chocolate, burnt puffed wheat and cinder toffee background. Slick powdery, cocoa-like condition ushering in a bittersweet, succulent blend of black chocolate, tropical fruit, soapy hop and burnt Sugar Puff. Makes more sense in your mouth than on paper.

1) Oh dear. A gusher, and I’ve not had many English ones- bonus point. Pours itself black with a climbing beige foam. Strong black coffee at the front softening into cinder toffee, blueberry, After Eight mint, heavy cocoa black chocolate turned to ash. Charred nut, burnt toast aroma with an undercurrent of jam like you spead the bread before you put it in the toaster. The usual balance, excellence and big bold flavours from The Kernel.
2) 6.5%. No gushing this time, but plenty more US hop, pithy grapefruit, liquorice and Neopolitan ice cream notes. Top stuff.

Bottle thanks to Colin. Pours very dark brown with cocoa brown head. Nose and taste of roasted chocolate malts, cocoa, day old coffee, earthy hops and light pine. Medium body. Finishes dry cocoa/coffee.

33cl from DeMolen biershop.
Brune, col fin beige.

330ml bottle shared with blankboy and garthicus. Deep reddish-brown, average frothy beige head. Incredibly dry aroma - roast nutshell malt, tons of dry resin bitterness. Taste follows, more acidic, not as roasty or bitter, mild alcohol. Slick, astringent mouthfeel, mild carbonation, very long bitter, coffee ground sourness. Interesting take.

Explosive gusher. Medium beige head, at least after we’ve been cleaning for half an hour. Muddy deep dull brown body with floaties. Strong resiny wooden lacquer aroma with spicy orange notes, as well as some earth. Dry-sweet roasty oranges and earth taste. Mid-bodied. Flat, dull mouthfeel, unsurprisingly. Dry-sweet roasty burnt popcorn aftertaste with fruity notes. Probably quite good when not so damned flat. (0.33l bottle, beermerchants.com.)
