Oct 2012 - concentrated roasted barley is the main flavour and imparts a fuller body. Taste is very similar to the beers I made myself in 2009 (which were basically made from over-concentrated barley with a fair bit of hops). Not very special, and I couldn’t pick up much flavour from the cacao nibs which had been added.

mmmm.... lovely with flapjacks. Did I ever tell you that my missus makes kick-ass flapjacks? If I didn’t, then I should, and they’re getting better. Some choc, rich, medium body, really tasty, I feel spoilt.

Bottle 330ml.

Clear dark black brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, cacao, dusty chocolate. Initial flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter, finish flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and heavy biiter with a long duration, dusty chocolate, cacao, roasted, ash. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20121201]

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured pitch black with a thin tan head. The aroma is of strong coffee and malt. The flavour is medium bitter, with bags of coffee, liqourice and dry hoppiness on the palate. A superb porter, but then again, i’d expect nothing less from The Kernel.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. Black pour with a light tan head. Lots of smoke, coffee and burnt wood in the aroma. Smooth cream coffee flavour with licorice and chocolate notes. Quite a smoky dry mouthfeel. Tasty.

33cl bottle from at the Brewery. It pours a dark brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is roasty with some cocoa and tobacco. Taste is ashy and roasty with very little acidic notes. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Good porter but could use more cocoa to me.
