Simple recipe, massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Black pour, virtually no head. Very light carbonation but big roasty aroma. Taste of roasted malt, wood, cocoa, leathery, treacle. Heavier body.

Draft at BrewDog Shoreditch in London. Aggressive day today, hitting freaking BrewDog after no sleep except an unplanned half hour nap that made me miss a big conference call. Whatever, work, who cares. Need beer. Must tick. Get back on that horse, dude, and down some shot glass sized pours of the rare stuff. England is inspiring, home of Mick the Tick and many other legends. Holy schnikeys this one is intense. 2oz is really all you need, even if you’re not a ticker (but really, who isn’t these days)? It is black as all hell and you know it’s going to hurt you. Aroma is fairly understated and does not prepare you for the flavor blast. Roast, anise, candied plum. The flavor takes a second to hit you but then blasts the living crap out of your taste buds. Cadbury Fruit & Nut bars come to mind, amped up 50x and joined by an onslaught of vanilla, anise, tobacco, and all kinds of crazy stuff. Thick, intensely full and smooth mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. I like it, but it put me on my arse (trying to speak British here). Blimey.

On tap (keg) @ Beer Temple. ’Clear’ very dark (almost black) color. Short soapy beige head. Aroma’s: Heavy roast, ground coffee, slight malty sweetness, hints of red fruit (notably retronasal). Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, moderate bitter. Medium bodied. Finishes burnt, ashy, moderate to full bitter. Without the sweetness this would be a bit too burnt, but that saves it.

Mooie zwarte kleur met een volle bruine kraag. Ruikt sterk koffie, chocolade. Smaakt sterk naar koffie, vanille en chocolade. Erg goed, maar iets te veel koffie m

Pours a black beer with a not very long lasting head. Smells incredible, coffee, lots of chocolate, bot cream/vanilla. Tastes fruity, coffee, chocolate and roasted. Very nice. Average carbo, medium body and a sticky texture.

Potent aroma of roasted malts, coffee, peat, licorice, chocolate, slight smoke. Flavour is similar, medium peaty sweetness with some bitterness in the finish. Very thick body. Not as massive as an Imperial Russian Stout, but this is about as good as a ’regular’ Stout gets.
