Based on a recipe from a London Brewery in 1890.
Simple recipe, massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Saeglopur (961) - Vienna Woods, AUSTRIA - FEB 3, 2014
Bottle from bieresgourmet.be. Black body with small tan head. Aroma of roast, dark chocolate, coffee, nuts, wood, dark dried fruits, some smoke. Tastes of coffee and cocoa beans, roasted malt, smoke, leather, dried fruits. Nice, how the initial chocolate sweetness shortly gets replaced by a bitter, roasty coffee. Mouthfeel is full, oily, with a medium carbonation and finishes bitter, with coffee, bitter chocolate, some cigar like smokiness and slightly alcoholic. Excellent, greatly balanced, complex Stout, with loads of interesting dark aromas.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours black in color with a tan head. Roasted malts, dark chocolate and cold coffee in aroma. Chocolate, light burnt notes and slightly bitter chocolate in taste. Superb, easy drinking and good tasting stout. Roasted bitter chocolate in finish.

Bottle (6,9% ABV). A pitch black beer, with a large, frothy, fully lasting brown head. The aroma is heavily malty (coffee, roasted grain, caramel, some chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of dried dark fruits, touches of vanilla, tobacco and alcohol. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/oily texture, lively carbonation, fairly dry and long finish with moderate bitterness, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Just a tad too acidic in the taste, otherwise strong, aromatic and flavorful. Nicely dry, with balancing final bitterness. It gets better as it warms, with a prominent and clean coffee note.

Bottle. Rich roasted malt and coffee aroma. Sweet nutty/malty roast, with chocolate, vanilla and dark fruits - these flavours subside to reveal the serious leather and cigars and a pungent long dry and very bitter finish. The switch over is good, but a little to pronounced for me. Soft.

Jet black, tan head. Poured through a guinness nozzle to get some head because there is no carbonation and zero head without it. Not a problem but just looks a bit shit, like flat coke. Aroma - mostly expresso and coffee, dark dried fruits, rum and raisin ice cream and molasses. Taste - all the above, really soft mouthfeel, silky, low bitterness, oily. Fantastic.

Aroma: roasted malts, coffee. Appearance: pitch black, thick creamy brown head, disappearing rather quickly. Taste: initially sweet then getting slightly biter. Palate: creamy, low carbonation, bitters continue. Overall: impressive Foreign Stout. Bottle from Drinker’s Paradise, London

Bottles, sampled 0,1-0,15 ltr. Had this one during a stout/porter tasting together with some rarities and well known great beers as the Rogue Chocolate Stout. Anyway, this beer was simply the best. The aroma has silky chocolate, some dark fruits, some leather. Black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is sweet, has chocolate, some vanilla there. It gets more bitter towards the end. It has a medium body and oily texture. Very nice balance, tongue teaser. Or as we say in dutch ’Alsof een engeltje op je tong pist’.

Dense black with swiftly dissipating head. Rich nutty pudding nose, coarse leather as it warms up. Soft dried damson brightness initially. Smooth oily carbonation backed by a rich roasted nutmeg and matched bitterness towards the finish. Coffee oil linger. I think this has improved or at least beats the bottle.
