Simple recipe, massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Bottled from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Pitch black, lasting brown head, beautiful. Powerful nose of roasted malts, coffee, licorice, chocolate, vanilla. Mainly bitter, somewhat sweet flavor, roasted malts, coffee (espresso), licorice. Thick mouthfeel. Everlasting bittersweet finish. Those Kernel guys definitely know what they are doing, truly great stuff!

Nieprzejrzyście czarne, z piękną, drobną, beżową pianą, która fantazyjnie zdobi szkło. Aromat to mieszanka, gorzkiej czekolady, kawy i paloności. W smaku piwo jest pełne i gładkie. Słodka czekolada, kawa, popiół i gorzka czekolada na finiszu. Całość tworzy doskonałą kompozycję, coś jak wytrawny czekoladowy deser. Piwo lekko skleja usta, jest bardzo intensywne.

Black colored, strong tan creamy lasting head. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malt, bit of roasted acidity and some sugar. Taste is medium to strong sweet brown sugar and chocolate with a constant bitter chocolate and strongly roasted background, some licorice. Dry roasted and strong dark chocolate finish and a lasting aftertaste. Medium to full bodied and moderate- carbonation, sticky. (on tap, Moeder Lambic, Brussels, B)

Bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Dark, dark brown, vey nearly black. Impenetrable. Carbonation allows a bit of milk chocolate coloured head to swirl on top. Soft aroma of chocolate, vanilla, eggnog, a bit of strong black coffee. Figs. Surprisingly sweet start to the taste is met by a reasonably grainy bitter. Intense. Bitter but balanced finished. The body in not particularly thick for a strong stout but it doesn’t need to be. Carbonation is well-judged. A winner.

I love history and I love beer so historical recipes being re-created really draw my attention. This is the Kernel Export Stout London 1890 recipe 7.1% I had the 10.1% Imperial Brown Stout London 1856 which was excellent so I am eager to try this bottle I picked up in London. It pours a deep black with a thick rusty tan head of foam. The aroma is rich savoury chocolate and toasted oats. It may even have hints of marshmallow? Full bodied with a silky smooth texture, this is hardcore. The taste is darkly bitter roastiness, oats, dark chocolate, dried fruits, some espresso dark dark dark coffee notes. Really great but I feel the 1856 was sweeter/less bitter and so I know what I’ll be picking up next time I am in the UK. Kernel Rocks.
