Simple recipe, massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Big brown head, almost black colour. Strong aroma of chocolate and coffee right out of the bottle. Roasted malt, stinging hints of smoke/wood. Taste is malty with light heavy roasty bitterness, medium smoke, almost medium coffee. Dark chocolate. Light fruity. Massive indeed. Finish is rather simple, but enjoyable roasty bitterness with a pinch of smoky tartness. Very nice, I hope to have this again someday.

It really calls for a juicy steak to go with.

Bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Dark, dark brown, vey nearly black. Impenetrable. Carbonation allows a bit of milk chocolate coloured head to swirl on top. Soft aroma of chocolate, vanilla, eggnog, a bit of strong black coffee. Figs. Surprisingly sweet start to the taste is met by a reasonably grainy bitter. Intense. Bitter but balanced finished. The body in not particularly thick for a strong stout but it doesn’t need to be. Carbonation is well-judged. A winner.

I love history and I love beer so historical recipes being re-created really draw my attention. This is the Kernel Export Stout London 1890 recipe 7.1% I had the 10.1% Imperial Brown Stout London 1856 which was excellent so I am eager to try this bottle I picked up in London. It pours a deep black with a thick rusty tan head of foam. The aroma is rich savoury chocolate and toasted oats. It may even have hints of marshmallow? Full bodied with a silky smooth texture, this is hardcore. The taste is darkly bitter roastiness, oats, dark chocolate, dried fruits, some espresso dark dark dark coffee notes. Really great but I feel the 1856 was sweeter/less bitter and so I know what I’ll be picking up next time I am in the UK. Kernel Rocks.

Aroma of cocoa, coffee, brown sugar and hints of leather and vanilla. Black with a tan head. Medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter. Full body with a average to soft carbonation. Leaves the mouth quite dry. Overall a very enjoyable drink, rich flavour with a full body combined very nicely.

In bottiglia. Colore marrona scuro, schiuma marrone, fine e poco persistente. Aroma intenso di tostato, caffč, leggero bruciato. Al palato corpo rotondo, nota etilica non eccessiva, caffč e tostato intensi e puliti. Semplice e ben fatta.

WYGLĄD: Barwa czarna z rubinowymi refleksami, nieprzejrzyste. Piana drobna, gęsta, długa i wysoka. Ładnie oblepia szkło.
AROMAT: Intensywny. Kakao, praliny, kawa, owoce w czekoladzie, subtelna paloność. W tle zioła.
SMAK: Dominuje paloność przemieszana z ziemistością. Delikatny kawowy posmak - przyjemny.

Color is heavy black with a bit of brown. Can see the high gravity when pouring. The aroma is very strong and deep; caramel coffee and malt. The taste is smooth, again with caramel. Brilliant beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Three year old bottle. Solid black with a fizzy brown disappearing head. Deep liquorish full smooth black bean caramel roasted coffee smell. Full oily body. Initial taste of caramel and chocolate and moves to a smooth liquorish and finishes with a nice soft coffee roast. Excellent. Sort of reminds me of Lion Stout.
