Based on a recipe from a London Brewery in 1890.
Simple recipe, massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Chopp. Pitch black colour, nice medium dark brown creamy head, steady. Very pleasant aroma of well roasted malt, chocolate and some coffee too. Good filling mouthfeel. Lovely roasted maltiness in the flavour along with chocolate, some coffee and dark fruit. Well lasting nice roasty malty chocolate finish. Sweet like. Very pleasant brew.

Keg at BD ShepBush. Black, tan head slowly sinks to skin. Nose of roast barley, dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco. Tastes sweet cinder toffee, milk chocolate, dark fruit, cocoa, hop bitterness, ashy burnt roast. Medium full body, slick texture, softish carb, lasting cocoa and roast astringency. This beer is bloody delicious.

330ml bottle from Kernel on a Saturday morning. Pour pitch black with a nice tall tan head. Aroma is coffee, roasted nuts and trace of chocolat. Taste is a mouthful of joy. Medium sweetness and bitterness. Full body, creamy and average carbonisation. Long sweet, bitter and coffee finish. Looking forward to go back in the brewery.

UPDATED: OCT 16, 2014 bottled ; bought @ ’THe nest bottle shop in Hanwell" ; im an enthusiast for the foreign stout style, its cool that strong stouts are made in colonial countries where its shit hot warm like Srilanka ... . nose is chocolate pudding ,plum, raisin, espresso .Dark choc. Its a damn evil black colour ...Jet black ,like a midnight skyline over some haunted woods in a film about some bitch ass kids and a witch .... Its that black; On the palate oily and sweet/rich upfront .notes of rich dry roast ...choco bitterness .,some hangover coffee notes in the finish ..raisins linger in there .,with a long bitter finish - suggesting ashy burnt toast vibes . A pretty fucken solid rendition that is easy to swill and session . And i find its not too syrupy as is a custom flaw with this style . NIce beer .

Black small light brown non-lacing foam head. Aroma is little coffee with fruity tones, some rum indeed. Taste is similar mixture, nice warm alcohol drink. A warm beer. (Velp 201410)

330 ml bottle from Les Vignerons (11/2013 - 7.3% ABV). Absoulutely pitch black, totally opaque, with a tiny, bubbly, non persistent light beige head. Might be slightly colder than advised, but I was expecting a bigger and more intense aroma punch. Stil, typical roasted and smokey notes, lots of bitter dark chocolate, a hint of espresso coffee and licorice. Slightly nutty as well. Very smooth and ridicolously easy to drink. Pretty bitter upfront, but it needs to be to balance the proper malty and toffee sweetness in the aftertaste. Extremely harmonious overall. A hint of alchool warming, but pretty subtle and inoffensive. Soft carbonation, almost full body, oily texture. More than solid Stout, on par with the Export India Porter, which I totally love.

Bottle - pitch black with some signs of a dark brown head around the edges of the glass. Aroma is heavy on coffee and roasted malt with cocoa and earth. Some hints of tofu and salted caramel. Taste of coffee, roasted malt and caramel with a heavily and bitter cocoa end. Dense body, medium carb, pleasantly warming. Excellent stout.

Tasted on 2/8/14 from a bottle at the RBWG Grand Tasting, big thanks to chriso for sharing. Pours black with an average tan head that leaves a thin, even layer of lace. The nose has a bit of charred roast, toasted cocoa nib, chicory, dark chocolate, and a light nuttiness. The flavor is a bit more rich with more dark chocolate, a touch of smoke, and some decently bitter roast and cocoa nib. The body is medium plus with average carbonation and a long bitter roasted finish.

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Heavy malty aroma. Starts intense malty, earthy, notes of peat and coffee. Finish with hints of cacao. Good one!
