maneliquor (3206) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - SEP 16, 2014
Bottle mulled back from London and shared with Guy and Jackson at the shop. Pours like mud with some tan bubbles and gives off some sticky lacing. Nose is very molasses heavy with distinct honey sweetness, leather, brown sugar and stewed dark fruits. Loads of raisin sweetness and brown sugar in this with moderate smoke through the middle of the palate. It has a sweetness to it but that is mellowed out by a robust roastiness. Liquorice is quite prominent. Drinks superbly for 10+%. Solid in all aspects, just doesnít blow me away

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2014 330 mL bottle supplied by Leighton in a IP trade. Many thanks! Shared with non-RB friends. To oversized brandy snifter it pours a mahogany-tinted dark brown. Carbonated but just barely: a few whispers of a burnt sienna bubbles were visible up top. Aromas of sorghum molasses, rolled oats, sweet corn, fennel, soot, charcoal, London ale yeast, Nat Sherman New York cut cigarettes, mugwort, spearmint, caramelized onions, and black pepper. Tastes the same with the addition of cognac, refried beans, black licorice candies, ash, and bitter orange peel. Sweat, cocoa nibs, cotton, and earl grey tea by swallow. Interestingly vague flavors. In some parts, this is surprisingly unpleasant, but the barrel made up for it. Smoky and medium-bodied. Slithers down the throat wonderfully. Flavors definitely linger.

Bottle from Madmitch76. Pours almost pitch black with a small creamy tanned head. Aroma of sweet dark malts with a whiff of whisky.Smooth silky and vinous mouthfeel. Taste is moderate sweet, dark red fruits, chocolate and coffee, lots of smooth whisky, very well integrated whisky, layer upon layer of good tasty elements, lingering dark fruits with a light alcohol burn, impressive.

Bottle courtesy to Theydon_Bois (thanks Colin). Pours a deep black body with thin brown lacing. Aroma is vanilla, bourbon, oak and very faint char. Mouthfeel is medium to full with a rich, chocolately-bourbon character up front; followed by notes of vanilla, wood, caramel candy and toffee.

330mL thanks to Leighton! Pours clear deep sepia, little to no carbonation. Bubbles. Nose is chlorine volatile, warms up to some seriously rich chocolate mousse, sea spray, chocolate cake, cherry cordial. Taste is burnt apple, char/ash...moves to something more earthy/ashy as it warms, but there is a glimmer of cherry cordial and chocolate cake frosting atop. Soft, very smooth alcohol warming develops with subtle hazelnut. Definitely improves as it warms. Palate is thin up front with some chocolate sponge cake feel in the back. Hazelnut blends with neutral tannic Scotch barrel. Bitter and dry in finale. Still, it is a very temperamental beer that requires babying and coddling. I would rate this a 3.4 if it didnít dramatically improve as it warmed.

Thanks to Leighton for this bottle and to GT2 for sharing Aroma is pretty non-existent when cold. After it warms up though, there is plenty of cinnamon, caramel and vanilla and whiskey notes. Pleasant, but nothing out of this world. You definitely get the barrel in the taste, very nice. The taste is rounded out with some molasses, hazelnut and vanilla extract. Pretty simple, but tasty. Palate is a touch boozy, but it would be thin if it didnít have some alcohol to punch it up. This is a pretty solid, if simple, beer. It definitely needs to warm up and open up to appreciate it.
