330mL thanks to Leighton! Pours clear deep sepia, little to no carbonation. Bubbles. Nose is chlorine volatile, warms up to some seriously rich chocolate mousse, sea spray, chocolate cake, cherry cordial. Taste is burnt apple, char/ash...moves to something more earthy/ashy as it warms, but there is a glimmer of cherry cordial and chocolate cake frosting atop. Soft, very smooth alcohol warming develops with subtle hazelnut. Definitely improves as it warms. Palate is thin up front with some chocolate sponge cake feel in the back. Hazelnut blends with neutral tannic Scotch barrel. Bitter and dry in finale. Still, it is a very temperamental beer that requires babying and coddling. I would rate this a 3.4 if it didn’t dramatically improve as it warmed.

Thanks to Leighton for this bottle and to GT2 for sharing Aroma is pretty non-existent when cold. After it warms up though, there is plenty of cinnamon, caramel and vanilla and whiskey notes. Pleasant, but nothing out of this world. You definitely get the barrel in the taste, very nice. The taste is rounded out with some molasses, hazelnut and vanilla extract. Pretty simple, but tasty. Palate is a touch boozy, but it would be thin if it didn’t have some alcohol to punch it up. This is a pretty solid, if simple, beer. It definitely needs to warm up and open up to appreciate it.

Countbeer (5297) - Best of E-Town mit 2 Brauhausen, NETHERLANDS - DEC 21, 2013
Bottle: Thanks Iluvatarmilan: Served in a Chouffe glass: Small brown foamy head/lacing on top of a black colored beer. Aromas of hair, roast, light whiskey spicyness, marsipan, some hints of vanilla and liquorice. Flavour has the wood upfront, with spices following, ginger bread and some bitter cough syrup. Than there is the roast, coffee, chocolate and bitters. Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, spices, coffee, chalk, some cacoa, espresso and bay leaf drenched in chocolate. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture. After a while it gets a bit medicinal, still with loads of wood and some roast. Good beer though.

Bottle from Kernel. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is roasted malt, sweet whisky, spice, Christmas cake coffee, fudge, toffee, blue-tack and faint vanilla/coconut. The taste is rich roast, coffee, toast, earth, toffee, treacle, wood, alcohol warmth, coffee, medicinal notes, whisky and spice with a dry, warming finish. Full body, low carbonation and oily, yet soft mouth-feel. Good depth of flavour and all comes together rather well. Very nice indeed.

Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours dark blackish brown with a very small bubbly goldenish beige head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, peat, dark roast coffee, charred wood, tar, burnt caramel, hay, burnt cookies and hints of banana bread. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, sweet liquorice candy, high quality dark chocolate, moist wood, tar, chocolate cake, soy sauce, banana bread, burnt caramel, alcohol and hints of peat. Mouthfeel is round, soft, boozy and medium to full bodied. finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, chocolate cake, charred wood, vanilla fudge, alcohol, moist wood and hints of single malt whisky. Good but I fear I had higher expectations.
